Gaomei Wetlands

Gaomei Wetlands is a coastal nature area in Qingshui District, Taichung, where the Dajia River meets the Taiwan Strait.

Gaomei Wetlands is a coastal nature area in Qingshui District, Taichung, where the Dajia River meets the Taiwan Strait. A wooden boardwalk leads out over the mudflats toward a row of wind turbines. At low tide, the shallow water reflects the sky like a mirror, and you can spot crabs, mudskippers and birds along the way. The wetland is known for birdwatching and for sunsets over the water. The sea breeze is steady, the walk is easy, and the view changes with the tide and the light.

Where the wetland sits and how it formed

Gaomei Wetlands lies on the coastal Qingshui Plain in Qingshui District, just south of the mouth of the Dajia River. The river rises on Hehuan Mountain in the Central Mountain Range and reaches the Taiwan Strait here. The protected area covers about 1,500 acres.

The wetland exists because of the Gaomei seawall. Over several decades, silt built up behind it and formed the mudflats. In the Japanese period the area was a coastal resort. A lighthouse on the site dates from 1967 and is older than Taichung Port, the large port just south of Gaomei, which opened in 1976.

What lives here and what you can see

The wetland holds tidal streams, grassy patches, sand, gravel and mudflats within a small area. That mix of habitats supports many small bottom-dwelling creatures, fish, shellfish, birds and waterfowl. Gaomei is a well-known birdwatching site, and the best months are autumn and winter, when large flocks of migratory birds rest here.

From the wooden boardwalk you can watch small crabs and mudskippers on the mud and birds on the flats. Wind turbines turn slowly along the horizon. When the tide is low, the water lies shallow over the flats and reflects the sky. The scene changes with the light, the tide and the clouds, so two visits rarely look the same.

Please keep to the marked walkways. The vegetation is fragile, and stepping off the path harms the habitat that the birds and other animals depend on.

Sunset, tide and weather

Gaomei is known across Taichung as a sunset site, and many people come for that reason. The walk out takes a while, so arrive early enough to reach the end of the boardwalk before the light turns orange and pink. At the far end you can put your feet in the shallow water. It suits children, as long as they stay within the permitted area.

The sunset depends on clear weather. On a cloudy day the sky stays grey and the wind is strong, so think twice about going. Visiting a few hours before sunset means fewer people than at the peak, and weekdays are quieter than weekends. Some visitors leave just before the sun touches the horizon to avoid the crowd and the traffic leaving afterwards.

The beach beside the wetland is for walking barefoot on open sand. It is not a place for swimming.

Getting there and parking

Public transport takes some planning. One workable route is the train from Taichung to Qingshui, then a bus to Gaomei. The return bus connections are limited, so check times before you set out. Sunset tours with pickup in downtown Taichung are also available, and for two people they can cost less than a return taxi.

There are several car parks near the wetland. Some have toilets, and parking in those lets you use the toilets free of charge. Others have none, and some toilets are a fair walk from the boardwalk. Motorcycle parking near the nearby restaurants and shops is paid. Food stalls sit outside the entrance. The site has picnic tables, a playground, cycling lanes and a wheelchair accessible entrance, and dogs are allowed.
