The House of Nobility, or Riddarhuset, stands at Riddarhustorget in Stockholm, close to Gamla Stan and Riddarholmen. Built in the 17th century, it is known for its Baroque architecture and the Hall of Knights, where coats of arms record Sweden’s noble families. The building also preserves historical documents and genealogies, linking its ornate rooms to the country’s political past. Visits and guided tours are by appointment, so arrange access before making it part of your Stockholm plans.

A palace built for the nobility

Riddarhuset was built between 1641 and 1674, during Sweden’s Baroque age. French architect Simon de la Vallée designed the building, which became a meeting place for the Swedish nobility during the era of the Swedish Empire. Its symmetrical form and elaborate detailing set it apart among Stockholm’s historic buildings.

The exterior gives a sense of the building’s ceremonial purpose. Look for sculptures and inscriptions on the facade, as well as statues on the roof, including a figure of Hercules. The building’s design is also associated with Dutch Baroque and Nordic Classic styles.

Inside, the Hall of Knights is lined with plaques bearing the coats of arms of noble families. The collection includes 2,332 such plaques, making the hall a place to see heraldry at close quarters. Paintings, seals and porcelain are also among the objects noted in the building’s collections.

Riddarhuset has kept records of noble families for centuries. Its archives and genealogical resources connect the building’s decorative displays with family histories and Sweden’s political record. Visitors interested in tracing noble lineages can ask about the research resources available there.

From assembly house to historic landmark

The building served as a place for the nobility to meet and host events. Sweden’s Riksdag met there until 1866, after which Riddarhuset continued as a custodian of records and a meeting place for the nobility. Its uses over time have also included concerts.

Because access is arranged by appointment, a visit is different from walking into a museum with open galleries. A guided tour can add context about the building and the families represented in the hall. Riddarhuset is at Riddarhustorget, within reach of Gamla Stan and Riddarholmen, so it can be combined with a walk through the surrounding historic district.
