Stay inside Visby's wall for a first visit without a car, and outside it if you have one and want easier parking. Choose Fårö and the north for quiet coast with a car, and the south and west for farm stays and cycling. Book the ferry and the room together, and plan ahead for Medieval Week in early August.

How to choose a base on Gotland
Gotland is large enough that where you sleep decides how much of the island you see, and small enough that no base is out of reach. The Gotland travel guide covers the island as a whole, and the Sweden guide covers the rest of Sweden. For a first visit, Visby inside the wall is the base that suits most people, with a car added if you want to reach the north and the south.
Start with transport. If you arrive without a car, Visby is the only base that works well, because the old town, the harbor and the ferry terminal are close, and the airport is 3.5 km from the center according to Swedavia. If you bring a car on the ferry, or rent one, the island opens up and the quieter bases become realistic. Then weigh the season: in summer the old town is full and the rates reflect it, while in the quiet months many restaurants and sights outside Visby close, which makes a countryside base lonely.
The price bands here are rough guides for a double room per night: $ for a simple farm stay or hostel, $$ for a mid-range hotel or cottage, $$$ for a premium room in the old town in high season. Rates swing with the week, and Medieval Week in August is a peak, so no figures are quoted. Read the final total, tax included, and the cancellation terms before you pay.
1. Visby inside the wall
The walled town is the reason many people come to Gotland. UNESCO describes a medieval walled trading town of 105 ha enclosed by a wall of 3.4 km with towers and gates, set on a shore beneath steep cliffs, and notes that it is a living town. Sleeping inside the wall puts the harbor, the church ruins and the lanes at your door, and it means you can walk to dinner and back without planning a transfer.
The trade-off is cost and crowds. This is the most expensive area in high season, rooms are limited and many are small, and the lanes are cobbled, so luggage is a chore if you arrive by taxi to a pedestrian street. Parking is limited, which makes the inside of the wall a poor base if you have a car you want to use daily. If you stay here for Medieval Week, expect noise, costumed crowds and a fully booked town, and reserve well ahead.
For a stay of two to four nights without a car, this is the right choice. You can walk the full ring wall, see the harbor and add a bus trip or a day tour to another part of the island, then return to a car-free evening in the lanes.

2. Visby outside the wall
Just beyond the gates, the town continues in quieter streets of lower buildings and open space. UNESCO notes that twentieth-century planning beyond the wall followed a garden city approach, preserving considerable areas of open space with lower density, which is why the area feels calmer than the lanes inside. Many rooms here are in guesthouses, apartments and modern hotels, and parking is easier.
This is the base for families and for travelers with a car who still want to walk to the old town. Distances are short, so you can reach the gates, the cathedral and the harbor on foot in a few minutes, and return to a quieter street at night. It is also usually better value than the old town in peak weeks, though that varies by date.
The trade-off is atmosphere. You will not step out of your door into a cobbled lane, and dinner options near your room are fewer than inside the wall. For many travelers that is a fair price for a calmer night and easier parking.

3. Fårö and the north
Fårö is reached by the road ferry from Fårösund to Broa, a crossing of 1,300 m that takes six minutes, according to Trafikverket, and the ride is free. Staying north of the ferry puts you beside the coast and the rocky landscapes the island is known for, away from the crowds in Visby. It is a good choice for drivers who plan several days of coast walks and who accept that they will eat where they sleep or drive to dinner.
Remember the ferry rules. The road ferry has a priority lane in summer, from 1 June to 15 August, for permanent residents of Fårö, certain Gotland residents and transport and emergency vehicles, so visitors can wait in a queue on busy days. Check the timetable and the live information in the operator's app before you drive, and build a margin into any plan that depends on a ferry slot, such as a dinner booking or a morning departure.
The limits are distance and services. Visby is a long drive away, restaurants and shops are fewer, and in the quiet months many places close. A car is almost essential, and so is a plan for meals.
If you have a car and a plan for meals, the quiet coast pays off.

4. Southern and western Gotland
The south and the west of the island are a patchwork of farms, small villages and beaches, with long distances between them. Staying here suits travelers who want a slow trip: a farm stay, a cottage with a kitchen, a bicycle and a week with no schedule. Rates are often lower than in Visby, and you can find space even in a busy week.
The trade-off is that nearly everything requires a vehicle. Groceries, restaurants and sights are spread out, and there is no train. Bring or rent a car, plan your food shopping and expect an early finish to the day outside the summer season. Cycling is a good option for those who like long days on quiet roads, but check distances against the daylight hours.
If you want to see Visby, plan it as a day trip from the south. If you plan to split your stay, spend a night or two in Visby for the town and the rest in the south for the quiet.

A quick test for Visby: inside or outside the wall
Ask three questions. First, will you have a car in Visby itself? If yes, outside the wall saves you a daily parking search. Second, do you want to walk home through the lanes after dinner? If yes, inside the wall is worth the premium. Third, are you coming in the week of Medieval Week or another busy period? If yes, book whichever area has rooms left and walk in, because an old-town room in a peak week is the first thing to go and the walk from outside the gates is short.
If the answers split, choose outside the wall and spend your evenings inside it. The gates are a short walk apart, and the lanes at night are as accessible to you as to anyone sleeping there. What you lose is the last ten minutes of the evening, and what you gain is a quieter room and a simpler arrival.
Quick picks by traveler type
First-timers without a car: Visby inside the wall. First-timers with a car who want easy parking: Visby outside the wall. Couples who want quiet coast and a car: Fårö and the north. Cyclists and families who want space and a kitchen: southern and western Gotland. Medieval Week visitors: book inside the wall as early as you can, or choose the outside area and walk in.
Choosing by season
In summer, the island is at its busiest, with long days, swimming and all sights open, and Visby rates reflect it. In late spring and early autumn, the island is quieter and many services run reduced hours, so check before you book a countryside stay. In winter, the walled town is atmospheric but quiet, and some places close, which makes a Visby base the only practical choice. The best time to visit Gotland guide covers the seasons in more detail, including Medieval Week.
Choosing by length of stay
Two nights suit the walled town, with a morning on the ring wall and a half day on a short tour. Three or four nights let you add Fårö by car or tour. A week lets you split: three nights in Visby, then four in the north or south. If you are traveling from the mainland with a car, book the ferry first, since the crossing, not the room, is the scarce item; the guide to getting to Gotland explains the options.
Mistakes to avoid
The first is booking a countryside base without a car or a plan for meals. The second is assuming a room in the old town has parking. The third is planning a day around a Fårö ferry slot with no margin. The fourth is arriving for Medieval Week without a booking. The fifth is forgetting that outside high season many shops and restaurants shorten their hours, so a quiet-season stay needs a plan for dinner.
Booking tips for Gotland
Compare the full price, including tax and breakfast, and look at cancellation terms, since ferry weather and flight changes can shift a trip. Book the ferry and the room in the same week, because one without the other leaves you stranded. Many Swedish businesses do not take cash, so pay by card and read the Sweden money guide if your card has foreign fees. Signal can thin out on the north coast, so compare plans in the Europe eSIM roundup and download maps and tickets offline.
Island trips depend on one crossing, so read the travel insurance guide before you pay for non-refundable rooms.
Preguntas frecuentes
Where is the best place to stay on Gotland for a first visit?
Visby, inside the wall if your budget allows. The old town, harbor and ferry terminal are close, and you do not need a car. Book early for summer and Medieval Week.
Do you need a car if you stay in Visby?
Not to see the old town, which is walkable. A car or a bicycle opens up Fårö, the north and the south. The ferry lets you bring a vehicle, and the booking should be made with your ticket.
Is it worth staying on Fårö?
Yes for quiet coast and rock formations if you have a car and accept limited dining. The road ferry from Fårösund is free and takes six minutes, but a summer priority lane means queues are possible.
Is Visby expensive in summer?
Rooms inside the wall are the priciest on the island in high season and sell out for Medieval Week. Outside the wall or in the south can offer better value, depending on dates.
Is Visby close to the airport?
Yes. Swedavia lists Visby Airport 3.5 km from the center, so a taxi to the old town is short. Check which airlines serve Visby in your travel month.
