En resumen

Stay in Costa Adeje for a classic beach week, Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas for value and nightlife, Puerto de la Cruz or La Laguna for a greener, more local north, and Los Gigantes for cliffs and quiet. Pick by the weather you want: the south is drier and sunnier, the north cloudier and more varied.

How to choose a base in Tenerife

Tenerife is an island of microclimates, and where you sleep decides the weather you get, the beaches you can reach and whether you need a car. The Tenerife travel guide covers the island as a whole, and this page settles the base question, with a nod to the wider Spain trip if you are flying in from the mainland. The short answer: the south for reliable sun and beaches, the north for a greener, more varied week.

The island is built around the Teide volcano, which blocks cloud and wind from reaching the south. That is why the south coast is drier and sunnier, and the north is greener, with more clouds at certain times of the year. The coasts are about an hour apart by road, so you can sleep on one side and visit the other, but a base in the wrong place for your plans costs time.

Three questions help. How important is a beach you can walk to? The south has sheltered sand and big hotels; the north has sea pools and rocky coast. Do you want a resort or a town? Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas are resorts; Puerto de la Cruz and La Laguna are real towns with local life. And will you hire a car? A car opens the whole island, but resorts and towns can be enjoyed without one.

Price bands below are per night for a double room: $ is a simple hotel or apartment, $$ a mid-range hotel, $$$ an upscale resort. No exact rates are quoted, so check the final price at booking.

Costa Adeje is the south-west resort coast, with wide, sheltered beaches, a long promenade and large hotels with pools and children's clubs. The sea is often calmer than on the open Atlantic side, and the weather is the most reliable on the island. It is the classic choice for a first beach week and for families.

The trade-off is that it is a resort. The area is built around hotels and apartment blocks, and there is little local life inland. Dinner is easy, but choices skew toward international menus. For a more authentic meal, take a short bus or taxi ride to a nearby town.

A car is useful but not essential. Excursions to Teide, boat trips and the whale-watching harbors are well organized from here, and buses connect the main resorts.

Evítalo si you want old towns, markets or a village feel. Puerto de la Cruz or La Laguna suit you better.

Stay here when Teide excursions, boat trips and whale watching are on the list.

2. Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas

Best for

Los Cristianos is the old harbor town, with the ferry port and a calmer beach. Playa de las Américas, next door, is the busier strip, with bars and clubs. Together they are the value end of the south: apartments and hotels at lower prices than Costa Adeje, with plenty of restaurants and a direct line to the ferries to La Gomera.

The difference between the two matters. Los Cristianos suits travelers who want a walkable harbor, a promenade and a lower noise level. Playa de las Américas suits those who want nightlife and busy streets. If you are unsure, choose Los Cristianos and walk to the other when you want a night out.

It is also the most practical base for a car-free trip, with frequent bus links, boat trips and the ferries. Our hub for the Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and Costa Adeje area compares the three resorts in more detail.

Evítalo si you want quiet evenings by the sea. The old harbor is calmer, but Costa Adeje or Los Gigantes are quieter still.

Worth it for value and ferries on foot, if busy evenings do not bother you.

Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas

3. Puerto de la Cruz

Best for
Culture, hiking, green
Station
Bus; taxi from the airport
To airport
About 25–30 min from the north airport
Price band
$–$$

Puerto de la Cruz is the north-coast town, with a historic center, sea-water pools designed as lidos and a lively promenade. It has been a visitor destination for a long time, and it feels like a town rather than a resort. The setting is greener, the temperatures a little lower and the cloud more common than in the south.

It is the best base for the north. The Orotava valley, the old town of La Orotava and the laurel forest are within easy reach, and the Teide road climbs from nearby. The black-sand beach is less relaxed than the south's golden sand, so beach-first travelers may prefer the pools.

A car helps, but buses and taxis cover the main places. If you want a week that mixes walking, towns and some beach time, this is the strongest choice. See the North Coast Tenerife guide and the Puerto de la Cruz page for more.

Evítalo si you want guaranteed beach weather. The south is drier and sunnier.

If your week mixes walking, towns and some beach time, this suits it well

4. La Laguna and Santa Cruz

Best for
Short stays, Anaga
Station
Tram between Santa Cruz and La Laguna
To airport
About 15–20 min from the north airport
Price band
$–$$

Santa Cruz is the island's capital and port, and La Laguna is a colonial university town a short tram ride away. Together they form the urban core of Tenerife: arcaded streets, plazas, museums and local cafés. It is a good base for a short, culture-focused stay, and for walks in the Anaga mountains nearby.

This is not a beach holiday. The coast is a working port, and the sand is limited. It does, however, give a view of ordinary Canarian life that resort areas do not, and it is the most convenient base for the north airport.

If you want to combine a city weekend with a few days of walking, the tram, the buses and the nearby trailheads make it simple. See the La Laguna guide and the Santa Cruz de Tenerife page for more.

Evítalo si you came for the resort and the sun. The south is a better fit.

Worth it for a city weekend plus Anaga walking days, with the tram linking both towns.

5. Los Gigantes

Best for
Cliffs, boat trips, quiet
Station
Bus; car recommended
To airport
About 45–60 min from the south airport

Los Gigantes sits below a wall of sea cliffs on the west coast, with a small marina and a handful of black-sand beaches and pools. It is quieter than the resorts of the south, and the cliffs make for dramatic views at sunset. Boat trips for dolphins and whales leave from the harbor.

The terrain is hilly, so expect steps and slopes between the marina, the promenade and the hotels. The beaches are small, and there is little nightlife. It suits couples and travelers who want a calm place with scenery, and who are happy to drive for the rest.

A car is advisable. Buses run, but the island's best day trips start with a drive.

Evítalo si you want a long beach on your doorstep or a lively evening scene. Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos are better.

A good pick for couples who want scenery and calm and will drive for the rest.

Choosing by trip type

Match the base to the main reason you came. A beach week with children points to Costa Adeje, where sheltered sand and hotel pools do most of the work. A cheap week with a ferry or a night out points to Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas. A week of walking, gardens and old streets points to Puerto de la Cruz. A short city-and-hiking break points to La Laguna and Santa Cruz, with the Anaga trailheads on the tram and bus. A quiet week with sea cliffs points to Los Gigantes, as long as you drive.

Casa Salazar, Tenerife: white and brown concrete buildings near sea under blue sky during daytime
Casa Salazar, Tenerife

Teide is the one sight that does not move your base much. It is a drive from every coast, and a full day includes the cable car, the park and the road back, so the question is not which base is closest but which base lets you leave early. The island government charges non-residents for the summit path; the details are in Teide cable car and summit permit. If you plan to do Teide and Masca, give each its own day and expect to start before 9am.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is picking the north for guaranteed sun or the south for green walks. The two sides are about an hour apart by road and behave differently, so choose by the weather you want, and read north or south Tenerife if you are unsure. The second is booking the cheapest apartment far from the shore and hoping a bus will cover it. Buses link the main resorts but run less often to quiet corners, and a late return from dinner can need a taxi.

The third is booking Los Gigantes without a car, then relying on taxis for every outing. The fourth is forgetting the time of year: the south is busy from late autumn to spring, when northern Europeans arrive for winter sun, and rooms are tighter then than many visitors expect. The last is assuming that all the resorts are the same. Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos sit on one coast but feel different in the evening, so check which stretch your hotel is on before you pay.

Booking tips for Tenerife

The island is busy from late autumn to spring, when northern Europeans seek winter sun, and again in July and August. Book early for school holidays, Christmas and New Year, and for February if you want the Carnival atmosphere in Santa Cruz. Sunday to Thursday nights are usually cheaper than weekends in the town bases.

Decide on a car before you choose a base. A car is the key to Teide, Anaga and the northwest villages, and it makes a quiet base such as Los Gigantes workable. Compare car hire and transfers at the same time as rooms. If you plan to hike Teide, read Teide cable car and summit permit before you pick dates, and for the weather question see north or south Tenerife.

Check what the rate includes, especially breakfast and parking, and confirm the final price before you pay. Set up mobile data in advance with an eSIM or local data plan, and consider travel insurance with cover for mountain walks and rental car excess.

See the Canary Islands guide to compare Tenerife with the other islands.
