Parque de Atracciones Monte Igueldo is a small, old-style amusement park on top of Monte Igueldo, the hill west of San Sebastián's centre. A wooden funicular railway takes you up, and the view from the summit covers the city, the coast and the Bay of Biscay. The rides are simple and suit children and adults alike: a compact roller coaster, a boat ride that runs along the cliffs, and a few classic games. The most worthwhile climb is the Torreón de Igeldo, an 18th-century tower with a 360-degree view.

Getting up Monte Igueldo

The wooden funicular railway climbs the hill to the park, and the ride is part of the visit. The hill is within walking distance of La Concha beach, so the park can be combined with a walk along the seafront.

The park is open on Saturdays and Sundays. Check the hours on the park's page before you plan the day.

The tower dates from the 18th century and has five storeys. It was built as a lighthouse and now serves as an observation point, with 360-degree views of San Sebastián, the coast and the mountains beyond.

Climbing the tower takes some effort, but the view from the top is the best panorama of the city that the park offers.

The rides and the boat

The park is small. The roller coaster is compact and runs smoothly, and it is fun for its size.

The boat ride, known as the 'mysterious river', moves along the cliff and gives views across the bay. A mini roller coaster called 'Swiss mountain' is one of the park's unusual rides. Hold on to your phone on the coaster, since it is hard to film from the seat.

Food and drink on the top level

A bar on the top level serves strawberry mojitos and overlooks the view. The park also has a restaurant and a food service area, so you can eat without leaving the hill.

Walks on and around the hill

The Monte Igueldo Trail runs through lush vegetation along the Bay of Biscay. It leads to Eduardo Chillida's sculpture Peine de los Vientos, where wind and sea move through the metal comb of the work.

If you want to combine the park with a walk, the trail is the natural choice. Plan the walk before the park's afternoon opening so that the ride back down is not rushed.
