Playa Martiánez is a black-sand beach at the end of Puerto de la Cruz’s seafront promenade, beside the Lago Martiánez complex. Its rocky shore and lively Atlantic waves make it better suited to watching the surf, sunbathing or trying a lesson than to a relaxed swim. A surf school operates on the beach, and a nearby bar has sea views for a drink or a meal. Come for the breaking waves and views towards the La Orotava Valley, and take care around the water.

A beach shaped by the Atlantic

Playa Martiánez

Playa Martiánez sits at the northern end of Puerto de la Cruz’s promenade, next to the Lago Martiánez complex. The dark volcanic sand and open sea give it a different feel from a sheltered swimming spot. Waves can be strong, and rocks make getting into the water difficult, so take care if you come for a swim.

The shore is also a place to watch the changing surf. A surf school operates on the beach, where beginners take lessons, and the waves draw surfers and bodyboarders. If conditions are rough, you can still enjoy the view from the sand or promenade.

La Marea is named as a place to ask about wetsuit and board rental or surf classes. Check conditions and tide information before heading into the water, and keep your belongings away from the edge because the water can move quickly.

For a break from the beach, a nearby bar serves food and drinks with a close sea view. The Lago Martiánez pools are next door if you would rather spend time beside pools than in the open surf.
