Església de Santa Agnès

Església de Santa Agnès is a small Catholic church in Santa Agnès de Corona, in the northwest of Ibiza.

Església de Santa Agnès is a small Catholic church in Santa Agnès de Corona, in the northwest of Ibiza. Its whitewashed exterior and porch give way to a compact interior with a single nave, six side chapels and low ceilings. The restrained design and close-set space make this a quiet stop for architecture and reflection. The church was built between 1785 and 1812, and the village celebrates its patron saint, Santa Agnès, on January 21 with religious and festive activities rooted in local rural traditions.

Construction began in 1785 on the order of Bishop Manuel Abad y Lasierra and finished in 1812. The church was intended to serve people in Santa Agnès de Corona, a fertile but then isolated part of Ibiza. It is recognised as an Asset of Cultural Interest.

The building has a single nave and six side chapels. Its plain white exterior and low profile set it apart from more imposing churches of the same period. Local tradition links the low ceilings to a wish to finish the church quickly, though the story is told as popular lore.

Two entrances and a changed threshold

The south-facing entrance, beneath a porch, was the church’s only entrance for more than a century. After a tragic crime took place on its threshold, many local residents reportedly avoided passing through it. A second entrance was opened on the side facing the village square.

The main entrance remained closed until it was reopened in the second half of the 20th century. Inside, look for statues of saints and a more elaborate altarpiece, details that contrast with the restrained exterior.
