Stay in Myeongdong for a first trip: central, two stops from Seoul Station and full of food until late. Pick Hongdae if you want nightlife and a direct all-stop AREX ride from Incheon, and Jongno or Insadong for the palaces and hanok guesthouses. Gangnam suits business trips and shopping, Seongsu repeat visitors, and Itaewon anyone who wants international food on a hill.

How to choose
Seoul is big, but its subway is easy to use, and no area on this list is a bad base. What changes is which side of the Han River your days happen on, how your street sounds at midnight, and how much of your arrival day you spend with a suitcase on a train. The old city, with the palaces, the markets and Myeongdong, is north of the river. Gangnam and most of the newer business districts are south of it, so crossing between the two is part of every day if you split your time. This page belongs to the wider Seoul guide and the South Korea overview.
Two questions settle most choices. Is this your first visit, with palaces and markets on the list? Stay north of the river, in Myeongdong or Jongno. Is the airport train your priority, or late nights out? Hongdae has a direct all-stop AREX station and the liveliest evenings. If neither applies, work backward from your daily plan: a trip built around clinics, conferences or COEX points south, a trip built around cafés and neighborhoods points to Seongsu, and a long stay with a craving for variety points to Itaewon.
The price bands below are a rough relative guide to a standard double, not live rates, so check the price for your dates. Seoul hotels run small, and a standard double in a central tower can be compact. If you travel with two large cases, look at the room size and the walk from the station before you look at the price, and check whether the rate includes taxes and service charges.
1. Myeongdong
Myeongdong is Seoul's busiest shopping district, a grid of pedestrian lanes full of cosmetics shops by day and food stalls from late afternoon. It is the most central base on this list for a first trip. Namdaemun Market is within walking distance, the Namsan cable car and the path up to N Seoul Tower start at the south edge, and City Hall and Deoksugung palace are an easy walk away.
It is also the easiest area on arrival. Line 4 runs from Myeongdong Station to Seoul Station in two stops, where the AREX starts, and many airport limousine buses stop near hotels here. The shops and stalls quiet down at night, and after that the lanes empty out. The trade-off is that it feels commercial, not residential. There is little here in the way of neighborhood life, so plan an evening in another district.
Hotels are mostly mid-range towers built for visitors, with small but modern rooms. Many have a convenience store on the ground floor, which is more useful than it sounds on a late arrival.

2. Hongdae
Hongdae is the area around Hongik University, west of the center, and it is Seoul's student and music district: live clubs, street performers, small bars and a lot of cheap food. It has the best airport connection on this list. Korea Tourism Organization says the AREX all-stop train calls at Hongik University Station, so you ride straight in from Incheon without a change.
The main streets are lively late on weekend nights, and the side streets near the club area can be too. For sleep, look north toward Yeonnam-dong, along the Gyeongui Line Forest Park, a linear park built over an old railway, or south toward Hapjeong. Both tend to be calmer and are full of cafés and small restaurants. Zoom in on the map and check the hotel's street, not just the station name.
Line 2 connects Hongdae to the center and to Gangnam, and the area is the value pick for younger travelers, with a wide choice of guesthouses.

3. Jongno and Insadong
This is the old heart of Seoul. Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces are here, with Bukchon's hanok lanes between them, Insadong's tea houses and craft shops, and Gwangjang Market a short subway ride east. If you want to be at the palace gates when they open, this is the base.
It is also where to stay in a hanok, a traditional wooden house, many of them converted into small guesthouses around Bukchon and Ikseon-dong. Rooms are small and some have floor bedding, which is traditional and not for everyone. Ask before you book. Bukchon is a residential neighborhood, and local authorities have set visiting rules for tourists in its busiest lanes, so check the current rules before you plan a dawn or late-evening walk, and keep your voice down in the lanes.
Evenings are quieter than in Myeongdong. Jongno 3-ga has old-style pojangmacha tents and small bars, and Ikseon-dong draws a young crowd in the evening. Getting to the airport means a change, either at Seoul Station or onto an airport bus.

4. Itaewon
Itaewon sits on the south slope of Namsan, near the former US Army base, and it has long been Seoul's most international neighborhood. The main road and the lanes behind it have food from almost everywhere, plus bars that stay open late. Next door, Haebangchon and Gyeongridan-gil are steeper, quieter and full of small restaurants.
It is hilly. Some guesthouses sit at the top of long flights of steps, which matters with luggage, so read the hotel's access notes. Line 6 is the only subway line at Itaewon station, so most trips need a change, and the airport run takes one change and sometimes two. In exchange you get a neighborhood that feels lived in, with a good choice of mid-range hotels.
It is a good base for longer stays and for travelers who want a break from Korean food for a few nights. For a first trip of three or four days, Myeongdong or Jongno will save you transit time.

5. Gangnam
Gangnam is the business district south of the river: office towers along Teheran-ro, big department stores, the COEX complex with its giant library hall, and Bongeunsa temple across the road from it. Sinsa and Garosu-gil, a little west, have boutiques and cafés. Hotels here are larger and more business-style, and rooms are often bigger than in Myeongdong for the money.
The problem is distance. The old-city sights are across the river and need a longer subway ride with a change, and the AREX is not close. Airport limousine buses run to many Gangnam hotels and are often the easiest way in. Visit Seoul says airport buses take approximately 60 to 80 minutes depending on traffic and destination.
Stay here if your reason for being in Seoul is here: meetings, clinics, COEX events or shopping in Sinsa. Otherwise it is a long daily commute to the sights.

6. Seongsu
Seongsu was a district of shoe workshops and small factories on the north bank of the Han, east of the center. Many of the brick buildings now house cafés, design shops and pop-up stores, and on weekends the lanes around Yeonmujang-gil draw crowds of young Seoulites. Seoul Forest, a large park, sits at the west edge, and the riverside parks along the Han are close.
It is the area to choose on a second or third visit, when you have seen the palaces and want a neighborhood that feels current. Line 2 links it to Gangnam and to the center. Evenings are generally calmer than in Hongdae or Itaewon.
Hotels are fewer than in the other five areas, and several are new. Book early for weekends in spring and fall, and check the exact distance to the station.

From the airport
Almost all international flights land at Incheon, on an island west of the city, and the AREX airport railroad is the standard way in. Korea Tourism Organization (VISITKOREA) describes two kinds of train. The express runs nonstop to Seoul Station in approximately 43 minutes from Terminal 1 and approximately 51 minutes from Terminal 2. The all-stop train takes approximately 59 minutes from Terminal 1 and approximately 66 minutes from Terminal 2, and it stops at major stations such as Hongik University Station and Digital Media City Station.
Which one to take depends on where you stay. For Hongdae, take the all-stop and get off at Hongik University. For Myeongdong and Jongno, take either train to Seoul Station, then line 4 or line 1. For Gangnam and Itaewon, the airport limousine bus to your hotel is often the simplest option, because it saves a change with luggage. Visit Seoul says airport buses reach all major areas of Seoul and take approximately 60 to 80 minutes, depending on traffic and destination.
Korea Tourism Organization says most public transportation from the airport to central Seoul finishes at around 23:30, and that night buses with an N before the route number run to Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. If your flight lands late, work out the last train and bus before you choose a hotel in a far corner. Taxis are an option too: standard and deluxe taxis wait at the taxi platform outside the arrivals area, and international taxis with foreign-language service must be reserved in advance. Some flights use Gimpo, which is much closer to the city: the AREX all-stop train takes approximately 23 minutes from Gimpo to Seoul Station, and subway lines also serve the airport.
Getting around once you are here
The subway does almost everything. Visit Seoul says trains run non-stop from approximately 5:30 am until midnight, lines are color coded, and stations display signs in Korean, English and Chinese. Transfers between lines are free for Tmoney users, and multiple-journey Tmoney cards are sold at most convenience stores. Check the last train before a late night out in Hongdae or Gangnam, because the subway does not run all night.
Taxis are plentiful, and a ride-hailing app is the easiest way to call one if you do not speak Korean. Walking is easy in the old city north of the river and harder in Gangnam, where the blocks are long and the crossings far apart. For palace mornings, pick the area that lets you walk or take one short ride, because queues form at opening time and a long commute wastes the best hours.
Taxes and booking
Book early for the spring cherry blossom weeks and for fall foliage, when prices in Myeongdong and Jongno tend to rise and good mid-range rooms go first. Korean public holidays like Chuseok and Seollal, which move with the lunar calendar, change the city in the other direction: many shops close and hotels can be cheaper, but trains and buses out of Seoul are full. Check the dates before you pick the week.
At check-in, expect to show your passport. Most hotels take international cards, but small guesthouses in Bukchon and Hongdae sometimes prefer cash or a local payment app. Ask when you book, and keep a backup plan for the first night, such as a flexible rate, in case a flight delay pushes you past check-in hours.
Preguntas frecuentes
What is the best area to stay in Seoul for a first trip?
Myeongdong. It is central, two subway stops from Seoul Station and the AREX, within walking distance of Namsan and Namdaemun Market, and it has a wide choice of mid-range hotels. Jongno is the alternative if palaces matter more than shopping.
Is Hongdae too noisy to sleep?
The streets right around Hongik University Station and the club area are lively late on weekend nights. A hotel toward Yeonnam-dong or Hapjeong keeps the same station access with quieter streets, so check the map before you book.
Should I stay in Gangnam?
Only if your reason is south of the river: business, clinics, COEX or Garosu-gil. The palaces and old markets are across the river and need a longer subway ride with a change, and the AREX is not on your doorstep.
How do I get from Incheon to my hotel?
Take the AREX train to Seoul Station or Hongik University, then the subway or a taxi. Korea Tourism Organization lists the express at about 43 minutes from Terminal 1 and about 51 from Terminal 2, and the all-stop train at about 59 and 66 minutes, to Seoul Station. Airport limousine buses serve many hotel areas.
What if I land late at night at Incheon?
Korea Tourism Organization says most public transportation from the airport to central Seoul finishes at around 23:30, and that night buses, marked with an N before the route number, run to Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Check your flight time against the last AREX train before you book a hotel far from a night bus stop.
Does the hotel price include tax?
Not always. Some hotels quote a rate before taxes and service charges, so the total at check-out can be higher than the headline price. Check what the rate includes before you compare.
