Gyeongpo Beach is a sandy beach in Gangneung, Gangwon-do. The beach is lit well into the night, so you can walk the shore after dark, and the restaurants along the beach street keep serving late. The water is clear and the sand is kept clean. The beach is quieter than many other Korean beaches. Staying at the Skybay Hotel beside the sand gives you good views, especially at sunrise.
The beach after dark

Lights run along the sand and the wooden plank walkway, so the beach stays easy to walk well into the evening. The walkway is a good place for photos at night.
The restaurants on the street beside the beach serve late, so you can eat after a walk along the shore. In early April the air was still cool, but walks on the sand were comfortable without a heavy coat.
Sand, water and the view

Staff comb the sand for litter, which keeps the shoreline clean. The water is clear, and on a clear day it sparkles.
Lifeguards have been on duty on the beach, and the beach is less busy than many others in Korea. Water sports are offered here, but language can be a barrier for some visitors, so arrange them in advance if you need English.
The Skybay Hotel sits next to the beach and has good views, especially at sunrise. If you plan to spend the day on the sand, a tent gives more shade than an umbrella.
Around the beach
A seafood and tofu soup village lies about 2 km south of the beach. The area has coffee shops, sandwich shops, burger places and gelato shops, and most of the food stops are within a few hundred metres to 2 km of the sand.
Coffee museums, several historic sites and indoor and outdoor activities for younger children are close by. Some of the more unusual places are 3 km or more away, so plan a taxi or bus for those.
