The Cape Wheel
Lugar emblemático

The Cape Wheel

The Cape Wheel is a 40 metre observation wheel on the Lawns at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

The Cape Wheel is a 40 metre observation wheel on the Lawns at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. Its enclosed, air-conditioned cabins turn slowly, so the ride feels smooth and gentle, and one circuit takes about 12 to 15 minutes. From the top you can see the harbour, the ocean, Table Mountain, Signal Hill and Robben Island. Evening rides show the city lights as the sun goes down, so sunset is a good time to go.

Where the wheel stands

The Cape Wheel
The Cape Wheel

The Cape Wheel is an observation wheel on the V&A Waterfront, on Breakwater Boulevard. It rises 40 metres and turns at a slow, steady pace, so you rarely feel it move.

The wheel opened in 2008, and its current site is on Breakwater Boulevard. Restaurants, shops and waterfront walks are close by, so the ride fits easily into a day in the area.

The cabins

The standard cabins are enclosed and air-conditioned, and two of them are wheelchair accessible. The enclosed design suits families who want to ride together.

The VIP gondola is the upgraded option. It has leather seats, a glass floor and music, and a complimentary bottle of wine is served. Book the VIP gondola ahead if you want it.

What you see from the top

From the top, the view runs over the harbour and the ocean to Table Mountain, Lion's Head and Signal Hill. Robben Island and Granger Bay are also in view, and the Green Point stadium is not far off.

At sunset you can watch the light change over the water. After dark, the lights of the city and the waterfront come on, and the view changes again. Clear days give the widest view, so check the weather before you go.

How a visit works

A single ride lasts about 12 to 15 minutes. The wheel moves slowly and steadily, and the ride is safe, so it works well as a short stop between other activities on the waterfront. The entrance, parking and seating are all wheelchair accessible.

The staff are friendly and helpful. Birthday visitors may ride free, so check the website for the current rule. Ticket prices and any discounts are listed there too.

Families and the ride's limits

Children find the ride fun, and the wheel moves slowly enough that most young riders stay calm. Ventilation inside is limited, which matters on warm days and for anyone prone to motion sickness.

Tickets can add up for a full family, and local residents may find the prices high. Compare the website prices before you buy.
