Stay in the center around Liberty Square for a first visit, because the pedestrian streets, the museums and most hotels are there. Choose Petrovaradin if you arrive by train and want the fortress at the door, the Fair and SPENS district if you drive, and Sremska Kamenica for the Fruška Gora foothills and pools. Do not book next to the old railway station expecting trains, because it is not open for passengers.

How to choose a base in Novi Sad
Novi Sad is small enough that no base is far from anything, but the choice still shapes your mornings. The Novi Sad travel guide covers what to see, and this page settles where to sleep, with the wider country in the Serbia guide. For a first visit the answer is the center around Liberty Square, with Petrovaradin as the pick for people who arrive by train or care more about the fortress than about dinner.
Three questions decide the base. The first is how you arrive. The city's tourism organization says Novi Sad's main railway station is not open for passengers, and that trains from Belgrade end at Petrovaradin station, with free shuttle buses to the center. The second is whether you drive: the Fair district and the foothills suit a car, and the center and Petrovaradin do not. The third is how much of the trip happens outside the city. If a day goes to Fruška Gora, a base with easy road access matters more than a view of the square.
Price bands below describe a double room per night as a rough guide: $ is a simple hotel or guesthouse, $$ a mid-range hotel, $$$ an upscale hotel. No rates are quoted because they move with the season and events, so check the final price at booking.
1. City center and Liberty Square
The center is the base for most visitors. The tourism organization says Novi Sad has 26 hotels, from one to five stars, and that the largest number are in the city center. The core is Liberty Square, with City Hall from 1894, the neo-Gothic Church of the Name of Mary, whose 73-meter tower is the tallest in the city, and the Ironman Palace. The pedestrian Zmaj Jovina Street runs from the square to the Orthodox Bishop's Palace, and Dunavska Street connects the Danube bank with it.
Everything you came for sits within a short walk. The Novi Sad Synagogue, one of the largest in this part of Europe, the Museum of Vojvodina, the Gallery of Matica Srpska and the Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection are in the center, and the City Museum's Foreign Art Collection at Dunavska 29 lists visiting hours of 10:00 to 18:00 on its contact page. The tourist info center at Trg slobode 3 opens 08:00 to 21:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 17:00 on Saturday. A room here means a morning coffee on the pedestrian streets, an afternoon rest, and dinner without a taxi.
The trade-off is that you are on the far side of the river from the fortress. Petrovaradin is about 2 km from the pedestrian zone according to a hotel listing on the tourism site, a walk across the river or a short ride, and the train stations are served by the free shuttle rather than by foot. Rooms on the square can be livelier in the evening than rooms two streets back, so ask for a courtyard or an upper floor.

2. Petrovaradin and Gradić
Petrovaradin is the fortress side of the river. The tourism organization calls the fortress one of the largest and best-preserved in Europe and says that around a hundred studios, restaurants, cafes, museums and galleries sit inside it. The Upper Town is dominated by the Clock Tower, and the plateau offers the best view of the city and the Danube. Below it, the Lower Town, known as Gradić, is a baroque quarter of colorful facades and narrow streets, with the Roman Catholic Church of St George and the Serbian Orthodox Church of St Paul the Apostle.
Rail is the practical argument. Petrovaradin is the terminus for the high-speed Soko trains and for other passenger trains from Belgrade, so a base here removes the shuttle and puts you at the fortress in minutes. The tourism list includes a hotel at the foot of the fortress, and a baroque hotel on the right bank of the Danube with a view across to the city.
The limit is dinner. The best choice of restaurants, bars and museums sits on the other bank, so evenings in the center mean a taxi, a bus or a long walk back over the river. Choose this base when the fortress is the point of the trip, or when an early train matters.

If the fortress is the point, or an early train matters, this bank suits you.

3. Fair and SPENS district
Several larger hotels sit between the center and the fair grounds. The tourism list gives one at 2.5 km from the center and 1.5 km from the Novi Sad Fair and SPENS, the sports and business center, and another at 2.6 km from the center and 5 km from the fortress. SPENS has indoor pools, including an Olympic-size pool, which matters in winter, and some hotels in the district sit near the E-75 motorway, which the city page says runs past Novi Sad.
This is the base for drivers, for visitors to events at the fair, and for stays that mix business and sightseeing. Parking is easier than in the center and road access is better. The cost is distance: expect a bus, a taxi or a long walk to the Old Town each time, and fewer restaurants at the door.

4. Sremska Kamenica
Sremska Kamenica sits at the foot of Fruška Gora, which the tourism organization describes as Serbia's first national park, covering 26,672 hectares. A resort with indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna and a steam bath is listed on Fruškogorski put in the town, and the Jovan Jovanović Zmaj memorial collection, part of the City Museum, is here with listed visiting hours of 9:00 to 16:00. Wineries on the Novi Sad Wine Route, including one in Sremska Kamenica, are within reach.
This is the slow base: a quiet stay for hill walks, wine stops and pool time, with Fruška Gora trips starting at the door. The cost is the ride into the Old Town, which means a car, a taxi or a bus for every evening in the center.

For a four-star stay in Sremska Kamenica, this is one to consider

Where to stay by season
Novi Sad has a continental climate, with summer highs near 30 C and winter highs near 5 C, so the season changes what a good base means. In summer, the city's beach, Štrand, which the tourism organization says opened in 1911 and stretches along 700 meters of sand, makes a base with easy transit to the river more attractive, and rooms with air conditioning matter more than a view. The Danube restaurants known as čarde, on both banks and on Ribarsko Ostrvo, fill in warm weather, so book dinners ahead on weekends.
In winter, a central hotel with reliable heating and a short walk to the museums is worth the premium, because the museum circuit carries the day. Spring and autumn are the easiest times to book at any base, with comfortable walks along the Danube and in the fortress.
Events change availability. The tourism site keeps a calendar of events, and the fair and the sports center bring visitors, so check it before you choose dates. EXIT, which long used the fortress, said on 29 June 2026 that its 26th birthday was the first without final preparations there, so do not plan Petrovaradin around festival dates without checking exitfest.org.
Choosing by length of stay
One night works near Petrovaradin or in the center if Novi Sad is a stop between Belgrade and another city. Two nights belong in the center, with no move, and the Novi Sad day trip from Belgrade timeline shows how a single day falls, which you can stretch over two. Three nights suit a split: two in the center, then a night in Sremska Kamenica with a day for Fruška Gora, as covered in Fruška Gora day trips from Novi Sad.
If you are coming from the capital, the Belgrade travel guide explains where the train leaves from. A longer rental of a week or more suits an apartment in the center with a kitchen, and the Fish Market and the pedestrian streets are close.
Arriving by train, bus or air
The tourism organization says Novi Sad's main railway station is out of service for reconstruction and safety works, and that trains from Belgrade and other southern directions arrive at Petrovaradin station, with free shuttle buses coordinated with arrivals and departures to the center. Srbijavoz's timetable note lists Petrovaradin for trains connecting Subotica and Novi Sad with Belgrade Centar, Sremska Mitrovica, Šid and Užice, and Novi Sad Ranžirna for trains to Karavukovo, Bogojevo and Sombor. The city page words the Subotica line differently, so check the timetable for your own train. The 2025/26 timetable runs until 12 December 2026, so look for the new one if you travel later.
Coaches use the main bus station, which the tourism organization says handles about 1,500 departures and arrivals daily with more than 100 operators. The airport link is Belgrade Nikola Tesla, about 60 minutes by road according to the tourism site. Use only registered taxis, with a municipal registration number, as the British advice says for Serbia, and phone a radio taxi where you can.
Mistakes to avoid
The first is booking next to the old railway station on the assumption that trains stop there. The second is choosing Petrovaradin for a trip built around evenings in the center. The third is booking the Fair district without a car. The fourth is skipping the registration step in a private rental, which the foreign ministry says must be done within 24 hours of arrival, and which hotels do automatically.
The fifth is booking around EXIT without checking. The sixth is assuming euros are accepted in shops: the currency is the dinar, so change money only at banks or official exchange offices, as the British advice says.
Before you arrive: entry and money
Serbia's foreign ministry lists visa-free stays of up to 90 days in a six-month period for ordinary passports from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Germany, so check your own passport in its country list on the visas and entry page. It also says border officers may ask for proof of EUR 50 per day, a return ticket, a hotel booking and health insurance of at least EUR 20,000.
Set up your phone before you land. An eSIM for Serbia gives you maps and train tickets from the first hour, travel insurance covers medical care and delays, and the transport planning page explains how to buy rail tickets from the operator. For route ideas once the base is set, see the Novi Sad day trip from Belgrade timeline.
Preguntas frecuentes
What is the best area to stay in Novi Sad for first-timers?
The center around Liberty Square. The city tourism organization says most of its 26 hotels are in the center, and the pedestrian streets, City Hall, the synagogue and several museums are within a short walk.
Is it better to stay in Novi Sad or Petrovaradin?
Novi Sad's center for dining and museums, Petrovaradin for the fortress and the train. Petrovaradin station is the terminus for the high-speed Soko trains, and the Lower Town below the fortress is a baroque quarter of narrow streets.
Can you stay in Novi Sad without a car?
Yes, in the center or Petrovaradin. A free shuttle bus links Petrovaradin and Novi Sad Ranžirna stations with the center, and the center is pedestrian. The Fair district and the foothills are easier with a car or a taxi.
Should you stay near Novi Sad railway station?
No, not for trains. The main station is not open for passengers, and Srbijavoz uses Petrovaradin and Novi Sad Ranžirna instead. A hotel near the bus station still works for coaches.
How many nights do you need in Novi Sad?
One or two. One night turns a day trip into a relaxed evening on Zmaj Jovina Street, and two nights leave a day for Sremski Karlovci or another Fruška Gora stop, as the city tourism organization's three-day plan suggests.
