Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art is in a converted former school in Education City, on the outskirts of Doha. Its collection traces modern and contemporary art from the Arab world, with works across painting, sculpture, photography and installation. Displays change, so the galleries you see depend on what is showing during your visit. Look for work by Qatari artist Yousef Ahmad and, when on display, Jean Léon Gérôme. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and programmes for visitors of different ages.

Mathaf is in Education City, outside central Doha, in a school building adapted for gallery use by French architect Jean-François Bodin. The conversion retained the building’s human scale while creating flexible exhibition spaces. The name Mathaf means “museum” in Arabic.

The museum opened in 2010. Its collection brings together modern and contemporary art from the Arab world, with work spanning the early 20th century to the present. Paintings, sculptures, photographs and installations give visitors different ways to follow artistic developments across the region.

The permanent collection is not displayed all at once. Works rotate, and galleries have been organised around themes including women in society, changing portraits and histories, post-independence art, systems of perception, and the reinvention of materials. That means the selection on view can differ from one visit to another.

Artists represented in the collection include Qatari artist Yousef Ahmad, whose work centres on Arabic calligraphy and lettering. Jean Léon Gérôme has also featured in an exhibition at Mathaf. Check what is currently on display if you have a particular artist or exhibition in mind.

    Temporary exhibitions and programmes

Temporary exhibitions bring regional art into conversation with wider international contexts. Past displays have included film-based work as well as exhibitions with detailed interpretation and carefully planned routes through the galleries. The museum also runs workshops for different ages, which can be booked in advance through its Instagram account.

Families can find educational programmes alongside the art. Some exhibitions address political and cultural change, so the subject matter may suit older children and teenagers more than younger visitors.

    Planning your visit

Mathaf is in Education City Student Center. A visit can fit into a wider day on campus; Qatar National Library and Education City Mosque are also in the area. The Education City Metro station is about a 15-minute walk away, and a free tram circulates on campus. A visitor account describes taking the blue tram line from the metro area towards the museum entrance.

Admission is free. Bags cannot be taken into the galleries, but lockers are available. The museum has restrooms and Wi-Fi, and its entrance and facilities include wheelchair-accessible features. Allow time for both the permanent displays and any temporary exhibition you want to see.
