On Rua da Carreira in Funchal, the Madeira Photography Museum, Atelier Vicente’s, tells the story of the island through historic photographs, cameras and studio equipment. Set in the former workshop of photographer Vicente Gomes da Silva, it includes displays of early photographic techniques, studio sets and a darkroom, plus a film about Madeiran life. Courtyards and balconies preserve the character of the old building. Allow time to look closely at the images, then stop at the courtyard café for coffee and freshly baked sweets.

A photography studio with a long history

The museum occupies the former studio of Vicente Gomes da Silva, a photographer whose work is closely tied to Madeira’s visual record. The studio opened in the 19th century, and the collection brings together photographs and equipment from that era and later years.

The images offer more than a history of photography. They record people, places and changes in island life, giving the collection a social and local focus. Look for photographs that show how Madeira’s appearance and daily life have changed over time.

Cameras, processes and studio displays

Historic cameras and other photographic equipment sit alongside displays about early techniques and printing processes. Studio setups and a darkroom help explain how portraits were made and developed before modern photography. The exhibits include examples of early colour and three-dimensional photography, including images viewed through coloured glasses.

Take your time with the displays: the collection includes many objects and photographs, and the subjects vary. The archival film adds another perspective, showing scenes of Madeiran life.

The building and courtyard café

The museum retains the character of its former workshop, with courtyards and balconies among its architectural details. A café in the courtyard serves coffee and freshly baked sweets, making it a convenient place to pause during a visit.

There are lockers for visitors carrying large bags. The museum is on Rua da Carreira in Funchal; its entrance is listed at Rua da Carreira 43.
