Garden Mont Palace Madeira

Monte Palace Madeira is a terraced tropical garden and museum in Monte, above Funchal.

Monte Palace Madeira is a terraced tropical garden and museum in Monte, above Funchal. Its paths weave past plants from around the world, Japanese-inspired ponds and bridges, waterfalls, sculptures and Portuguese tile panels depicting scenes from the country’s history. Inside the museum, you can see Zimbabwean sculpture and minerals. The garden’s hillside position also gives views over Funchal and its bay. Plan a long visit to explore the different levels and collections at a comfortable pace.

A garden shaped by art and plants

Monte Palace Madeira occupies the grounds of a former estate in Monte, a hilltop district above Funchal. The property later operated as a luxury hotel before becoming a garden and museum. José Berardo acquired the grounds in the late 1980s, and the tropical garden became a public space in 1987.

The site covers about seven hectares and is arranged across multiple levels. Its collection brings together plants from around the world and species native to Madeira. Water is part of the garden’s design: paths lead past ponds, fountains and waterfalls, including a central lake where swans and ducks gather. Peacocks and chickens also roam around the grounds.

Look closely at the surfaces along the walkways. Tile panels from different periods are set into the garden, including Hispano-Moorish work and Portuguese scenes dating from the 16th century onward. The collection spans several centuries and turns a walk between garden areas into a chance to see historic tiles in their original outdoor setting.

The Japanese-inspired garden

One of the garden’s distinct areas draws on Japanese and Chinese design. Ponds, red bridges, pagodas and carefully arranged plantings give this section a different character from the tropical paths. Koi swim in the water, while the surrounding greenery and architectural details create plenty to look at along the route.

The grounds also contain sculptures and themed displays among the plants. The combination of art, water and planted spaces means there is no single short circuit that takes in everything. Take your time between levels and allow room for the museum as well as the outdoor areas.

Inside the Monte Palace Museum

The museum is housed in the former palace building at the centre of the grounds. Its sculpture collection includes more than 1,000 works from Zimbabwe, created in the late 1960s. A separate gallery displays minerals from around the world, including diamonds. Together, the collections add an indoor stop to a visit that otherwise follows garden paths and terraces.

The site is reached in Monte, close to the upper station of the Funchal cable car. If you travel up by cable car, remember that the garden’s paths descend across the hillside; returning to the station can involve an uphill walk. Set aside enough time for the museum and the garden’s different levels rather than treating the visit as a quick stop.
