For Cusco, Machu Picchu and the Andes, the UK government gives the rainy season as November to May, so the drier months are roughly May to October. Lima and the coast run the other way. In 2026 to 2027 a strong coastal El Niño is forecast to bring heavy rain to the north and central coast, so check official alerts before you book the coast. The Inca Trail closes every February.
Peru has three climates that follow different calendars: the desert coast, the high Andes and the Amazon lowlands. A month that is ideal for Cusco can be gray on the coast, and a season that suits the Amazon can slow the mountain roads. This guide, part of the Peru travel guide, picks a month by region and goal, explains the 2026 to 2027 El Niño forecast, and says who should avoid which season.
Which month for which goal
Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley with firm trails: June to October. They fall outside the November to May rainy season that the UK government gives for the Andes, while May sits at the tail end of it.
The classic Inca Trail: any month except February, when the Ministry of Culture closes the Inca Trail network. Plan far ahead for the months you want.
Fewer people and green mountains: the rainy season, from November to May, accepting rain, cloud and the chance of disruption. The wettest weeks are the ones to treat with the most flexibility.
Lima for food and museums: any month, since it is a city trip. For beach weather, summer from December to March is the clearest, though 2027 may be unusual (see the El Niño section).
The Amazon: choose by what you want. Higher rivers in the wetter months allow boats to reach further, and the drier months expose trails.
Festivals: June for Inti Raymi and the Fiestas del Cusco, late July for Fiestas Patrias, February for Candelaria in Puno.
Avoid for a first visit if you hate crowds: the dry-season peak, usually June to August, when the best-known sites are in highest demand.
Three regions, three calendars
In the Andes, including Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Arequipa and Lake Titicaca, the UK government says the rainy season runs from November to May, with heavy rain and snow in northern Peru and the Andes, including Cusco. SENAMHI, Peru's weather service, says rain in the sierra is frequent from December to March and usually falls after midday, often with hail and thunder.
The coast is a desert. SENAMHI says Lima gets under 15 millimeters of rain a year, mostly as drizzle, called garúa, in winter from June to August, and that low cloud forms along much of the coast from June to September. In the Amazon, the UK government's rainy season of November to May also applies to the jungle areas, where rockslides and mudslides can disrupt roads and walking routes.
| Opción | Wetter period | Drier or clearer period |
|---|---|---|
| Andes (Cusco, Sacred Valley, Titicaca) | November to May, frequent afternoon rain December to March | Roughly May to October |
| Coast (Lima, Paracas) | Rare rain, low cloud and drizzle June to September | Summer, December to March, with 2027 forecast to be wetter than usual |
| Amazon (Puerto Maldonado, Iquitos) | Rainy season November to May, higher rivers | Drier months for easier trails |

El Niño in 2026 to 2027: what changes
This is the part of the forecast that changes plans. Peru's official ENFEN commission, which monitors El Niño, maintains a Coastal El Niño alert and expects the event to continue until the middle of autumn 2027, with the highest probability of an extraordinary magnitude from September 2026 to January 2027.
For travelers, this has three effects. A beach and coast trip from December to March, the usual best time for Lima, carries more weather risk than normal, particularly on the north coast. A Cusco trip faces forecast rainfall that is normal to below normal, though the UK government still warns that the rainy season can disrupt travel, roads and rail. Anything involving flights, buses or river travel in the north deserves a flexible ticket and insurance with disruption cover.
Forecasts are updated regularly, so check ENFEN and the UK government advice again before you pay for non-refundable parts of a trip. See the insurance guide for cover that includes trip interruption.

Cusco, Machu Picchu and the Andes
The dry months suit the Andes best for trails and mountain views, and they bring the biggest crowds. The wet months are greener and quieter, but the UK government says the rainy season can disrupt travel services, road travel between provinces, flights and tourist sites, and that rockslides, mudslides and snow can disrupt walking routes, road and rail travel across the Cusco region, including routes to Machu Picchu such as the Santa Maria to Santa Teresa route and the Salkantay route. It advises checking conditions with your tour operator, traveling with enough food, water, cash and warm clothes, and contacting the iPeru information service before you set off. It also notes that train services in the south, including those to and from Machu Picchu, are occasionally suspended or disrupted by protests, so keep a spare day in Cusco.
Machu Picchu entry is by ticket for a circuit, a route, a date and an entry time. The guide to Machu Picchu tickets explains the three circuits and ten routes, and notes that four routes run only in high season. If the dates you want are sold out, the guide to quieter treks when Machu Picchu is booked out offers alternatives.
Altitude is a serious risk in Cusco, Puno, the Colca Canyon and Kuelap, according to the UK government. Allow a couple of rest days before hard hikes and speak to a doctor before you travel if you have heart, lung or blood conditions.
Lima and the coast
The coast has the reverse calendar to the Andes. SENAMHI says stratus clouds form on much of the coast from June to September, and that Lima's rain is scarce, most often drizzle in winter. In autumn and winter mornings often start cloudy, with the cloud clearing toward midday.
That makes Lima a year-round city for food and museums, and a good start or end to an Andes trip in any month. For beach weather and a brighter sky, December to March is the usual choice, but 2027 may break the pattern. The desert south of Lima, around Paracas and the Nazca Lines, is far from the north coast where the strongest rain is forecast, though flexibility still matters.
The Amazon
Peru's Amazon, reached through Iquitos in the north or Puerto Maldonado in the south, is humid year-round. The wetter months, roughly November to May, bring heavy downpours, higher rivers and a risk of landslides on access roads. The UK government notes Peru has had a major dengue outbreak following floods, and lists yellow fever, malaria and Zika among the health risks, so check the TravelHealthPro Peru guide for vaccines and prevention, which the UK government says to do at least eight weeks before your trip.
In the drier months trails and riverbanks are easier to walk. Lodges run in every season, so choose by the experience you want and confirm how guests reach the lodge in the wet months.
Festivals and holidays
Inti Raymi, the Inca festival of the sun, is held in Cusco on 24 June at the Qorikancha, the Plaza de Armas and Sacsayhuaman. MINCETUR describes the Fiestas del Cusco as running from 1 to 29 June, so June is festive all month and hotels fill. Book early if you want to attend.
Fiestas Patrias on 28 and 29 July are national holidays, and in 2027 they fall on Thursday and Friday, making a long weekend for domestic travelers. Buses and flights fill, so book early. In Puno, UNESCO describes the Festivity of the Virgen de la Candelaria as celebrated each February, with the main festival starting at the beginning of the month.
Who should avoid which month
Avoid February for the Inca Trail, since the network is closed. Choose another month, or look at alternative treks.
Avoid January to March for road trips in the Andes if your schedule is tight and your tickets are rigid. Landslides and rain can delay trains and roads.
Avoid June to August if you hate crowds, are on a tight budget or need flexibility at short notice. Demand is highest then.
Avoid summer on the north coast in 2027 unless you are flexible, because the official forecast is for above-average rain.
Avoid rapid itineraries at altitude in any month. Cusco, Puno and Colca ask for time to adjust.
Shoulder seasons: what you give up and gain
May and September to October give you drier trails and smaller crowds than June to August, with a little more chance of cloud. April and November carry more rain risk in exchange for quiet. The edges of the rainy season are where flexible travelers get the best value, provided they keep a spare day in Cusco.
What to pack
For the Andes in the dry months, pack for strong sun by day and cold nights: a warm jacket, a hat and gloves, sunscreen and sunglasses. In the wet months add a waterproof jacket and shoes that can take mud. Layers work best, because a morning in Cusco can be cold and warm up quickly.
For the Amazon, bring light long sleeves and trousers against insects, repellent and a rain jacket. Lima needs a light sweater when the gray season keeps it cool. Book trains to Aguas Calientes and your Machu Picchu entry together so the times line up. For data on remote routes, compare options in the eSIM guide, and for trains, buses and flights see getting around.
