Construction began in the late 13th century, when King Håkon V ordered a stronghold on the eastern side of the harbour to protect the city. Oslo became Norway’s capital in 1299. Over the centuries, the complex was extended and changed, and by 1592 it had developed into a fortress armed with cannons.

The site includes a medieval castle, fortress buildings and active military installations. Its position above the harbour gave it a strategic role in defending Oslo, and the walls remain part of the city’s waterfront today.
