Dunluce Castle is a medieval ruin on a basalt cliff above the Atlantic, on the north Antrim coast near Bushmills. Its broken walls and gatehouses stand above views of the sea and rugged shoreline. A stronghold above the Atlantic

Dunluce Castle

Dunluce Castle stands on a basalt cliff on the north Antrim coast. The first fortress on the site was established in the 13th century by Richard Óg de Burgh. The McQuillans shaped the earliest form of the castle that remains recognisable today, and later Gaelic, Norman and Scottish influences left their mark on its history.

The MacDonnell clan held the castle as a stronghold. Its past includes clan conflict and shifts in power, and its location helps explain its lasting place in the history of the coast. The ruins now look out across the Atlantic and the surrounding rocks.

Walk the grounds to see the castle’s surviving exterior, gatehouses and cliff-edge setting. Information panels around the site give context for the remains, and a map can help you follow the grounds. The landscape is part of the visit: views extend from the ruins over the sea and coastline.

The castle is also linked to the wreck of the Spanish Armada ship Girona. Cannons salvaged from the ship were mounted on the gatehouses. A story associated with the site says that part of the kitchen fell into the sea during a storm in 1639, taking several servants with it.

Planning a visit

You can appreciate the castle from outside its walls without paying to enter. For a closer look at the grounds and the remains, allow time to walk around and read the information panels. The site is close to the Giant’s Causeway, so the two can be visited on the same day.
