St Stephen's Chapel

Overlooking Judges Bay in Parnell, St Stephen’s Chapel is an early Anglican place of worship in New Zealand and a quiet stop for harbour views.

Overlooking Judges Bay in Parnell, St Stephen’s Chapel is an early Anglican place of worship in New Zealand and a quiet stop for harbour views. The chapel was designed by Frederick Thatcher and opened in 1857, replacing an earlier building that collapsed. Sit among the trees on the grounds, or attend the traditional Holy Communion service on Sunday morning. Its hillside position can make access challenging, so nearby parking on Stephen’s Avenue or Judge Street may help.

St Stephen’s Chapel replaced a stone chapel built for Bishop Selwyn in 1844. That first building was designed by Sampson Kempthorne, but it collapsed in July 1845, seven months after opening.

The replacement was designed by Frederick Thatcher, an English architect and clergyman, and opened in early 1857.

The chapel was intended as a possible venue for the signing of the constitution of the United Church of England and Ireland in New Zealand in 1857. This gives the building a place in the history of the Church of England in the country.
