Stay in Hakata if you ride trains or fly early, and in Tenjin for the best mix of food, shopping and quick subway links. Choose Nakasu if the yatai and nightlife are the point, and Ohori or Momochi for calm mornings. All four are on or near the subway line that reaches the airport in 5 to 15 minutes.

How to choose
The Fukuoka travel guide covers what to do; this page settles where to sleep. Fukuoka is a compact port city in Japan's Kyushu region, and one subway line strings the useful areas together, from the airport through Hakata and Tenjin to the west side. The city subway runs from 5:30am to 0:25am with trains every 4 to 8 minutes. That makes no area a bad base, so the choice comes down to your first train, your evenings and how much noise you accept.
Short answer: pick Tenjin for a first visit, Hakata if you arrive or leave by shinkansen, Nakasu if you plan to eat at the yatai most nights, and Ohori or Momochi if you want a calmer stay beside a park or the sea. Price bands below are per night for a double room: $ is a plain business hotel, $$ a newer business or mid-range hotel, $$$ an upscale or design hotel. They shift with the season and are indicative, so compare live rates for your dates.
Fukuoka has many business hotels with compact rooms, plus mid-range and upscale towers. If a traditional stay with a hot spring dinner is your goal, plan it for Beppu instead. Capsule hotels and guesthouses exist in Hakata and Tenjin and suit short, low-cost stays.
1. Hakata
Hakata is the transport hub. The Kyushu shinkansen and the Sanyo line to Osaka both stop at Hakata Station, JR limited expresses such as the Sonic to Beppu start here, and highway buses leave from the terminal next to the station. The airport subway lists 5 minutes from the airport to Hakata, which makes this the easiest area on arrival and departure days.
The station complex holds shops and restaurant floors, and Canal City is within walking distance. Evenings tend to be quieter than in Tenjin or Nakasu, though a few streets around the station have izakaya and ramen counters. If you plan several day trips by train, such as Nagasaki or Kumamoto, the station location saves a transfer each morning.
Rooms cluster in business hotels near the station, and rates are likely to rise around large events.

2. Tenjin
Tenjin is Fukuoka's downtown. Department stores, malls, basement food halls, cafes and small bars fill a grid of streets, and the Nishitetsu railway starts here: Crossroad Fukuoka, the prefectural tourism site, describes a limited express to Yanagawa (about 45 minutes) and a limited express to Futsukaichi, where you change for Dazaifu. The airport subway takes about 11 minutes, and Hakata Station is a short ride back the other way.
It is the best all-round base for a first visit. Evenings are easy: Fukuoka's tourism sources list yatai in Tenjin as well as Nakasu, so you can often walk from a hotel to dinner without a train. Ohori Park is two subway stops west, and Nakasu is a short walk east across the river.
Hotels range from business hotels to larger mid-range towers. Choose a room a block or two off the main shopping streets if noise matters, since some side streets fill with bar customers late.

If Tenjin is your base, this hotel is 0.6 km from the area centre

3. Nakasu
Nakasu is a small island with the Naka River to the west and the Hakata River to the east, and it is where the yatai are best known. The stalls gather around the southern part of the island along the Naka River in the evening, and the surrounding blocks fill with bars, izakaya and clubs. If you plan to eat at the stalls most nights and then walk home, Nakasu removes the last train from the plan.
The area is lively rather than quiet. Weekend nights run late, and side streets can be loud. It is also central: Tenjin and Hakata are each a short subway ride, and Nakasu-Kawabata Station is listed at about 9 minutes from the airport.
Expect mostly business hotels, some of them in small older buildings. Ask for an upper floor or a room facing away from the main street if you are a light sleeper, and check reviews for noise.

4. Ohori and Momochi
Ohori Park is a large lake park with a path around the water, and it anchors the quieter west side of the city. Ohori Koen Station is two subway stops from Tenjin, so you sleep away from the crowds but stay close to the food. Momochi, farther west toward the bay, is a seaside district with Fukuoka Tower.
This is the area for slow mornings, running or walking by the lake, and a longer stay. It suits families and travelers who dislike sleeping in the middle of nightlife. Momochi is reached by subway plus a short walk or bus, so check your hotel's distance from a station.
The trade-off is dinner. There are fewer restaurants and no yatai at your door, so you will ride to Tenjin or Nakasu for the best evenings.

If you want the park path nearby, this is a practical base for Ohori and Momochi

From the airport
Fukuoka Airport (FUK) has its subway station at the domestic terminal. The Fukuoka City Subway lists 5 minutes to Hakata, 9 to Nakasu-Kawabata, 11 to Tenjin and 15 to Ohori Koen, with trains every 4 to 8 minutes. If you land at the international terminal, the airport's official site says to use the free shuttle bus to the domestic terminal and take the subway from there, so add that transfer to your arrival plan. That short ride is the reason many travelers pick Hakata or Tenjin and skip the taxi.
Ohori Koen Station is on the same line, and Momochi needs a subway ride plus a bus or short walk. The subway runs from 5:30am to 0:25am, so a very late arrival or an early departure may need a taxi instead. An IC card such as ICOCA or SUGOCA is accepted on the city subway.
If you arrive at the shinkansen rather than the airport, Hakata is your station. Tenjin is a few subway stops from there. If your plans include Nagasaki, Kumamoto or Beppu, check whether a regional rail pass beats single tickets using the JR Pass guide before you book, and plan your base around the first long train.
When to book
Fukuoka is busy at fixed times, and rooms are likely to sell out first in Hakata and Tenjin. Golden Week includes the Hakata Dontaku festival on 3 and 4 May, which Crossroad Fukuoka lists. Spring and autumn peak seasons also raise rates in much of Japan. Concerts, sports and conventions can push up prices on single nights, so check event calendars before you fix your dates.
July brings the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival, which runs from 1 to 15 July, and the mid-August Obon holiday fills trains and rooms across Japan. For the best value, compare rates in the weeks between festivals. See the best time to visit Japan for the wider picture, including typhoon season in late summer and early autumn.
Book refundable rooms first, then watch rates. For one-night stops on the way to Beppu, Nagasaki or Kumamoto, a business hotel near Hakata Station keeps the transfer short.
Accommodation tax
Fukuoka City charges an accommodation tax per person, per night. The rate is ¥200 for stays under ¥20,000 per person per night and ¥500 from ¥20,000. It is per person, not per room, so a double pays it twice. Some booking sites include it in the total, so check your confirmation to see whether the hotel will collect it separately.
The bands and hotel practice are described in the City of Fukuoka notice for visitors. Compare the total per night after tax when you weigh areas, and check whether the price you see includes it.
Rain, mistakes and who should choose what
Fukuoka is easy to manage in bad weather because the subway runs on one line through the useful areas and the department stores and food halls in Tenjin and the station complex are indoors. If rain is forecast for a yatai night, Tenjin or Nakasu still work, but plan a backup dinner under cover and expect stalls to be less comfortable. Typhoon season can disrupt trains and flights, so avoid a tight connection on your last day.
Three mistakes are common. The first is booking Hakata for atmosphere: it is the best base for trains, but evenings are quieter than in Tenjin or Nakasu. The second is booking Nakasu without checking for noise, since weekend nights can run late. The third is assuming the subway reaches every airport terminal; it stops at the domestic terminal, and international passengers need the free shuttle bus.
If you want one answer: first-time visitors with two nights should choose Tenjin, travelers with a shinkansen or early train should choose Hakata, anyone planning to eat at the yatai most nights can choose Nakasu if they accept the noise, and travelers who want calm mornings by a park should choose Ohori. Skip Nakasu if you are a light sleeper, and skip Ohori and Momochi if you want to walk to dinner after dark.
Preguntas frecuentes
Is Hakata or Tenjin better for a first trip to Fukuoka?
Tenjin, unless you have an early train. It has the malls, the food halls and the evening yatai within walking distance, and the Fukuoka City Subway lists 11 minutes to the airport. Hakata is the better pick for shinkansen mornings and short stays.
Where should I stay in Fukuoka for the yatai?
Nakasu or Tenjin. The stalls set up in the evening along the river in Nakasu and on streets in Tenjin, so you can walk home. Nakasu is louder late at night; Tenjin is calmer once you leave the main streets.
How many nights do you need in Fukuoka?
Two nights cover the city itself. Add a night for each overnight elsewhere, such as Beppu or Nagasaki. Dazaifu and Yanagawa work as day trips from a Hakata or Tenjin base.
Is it better to stay in Fukuoka or Beppu?
Fukuoka for food, shopping and transport, Beppu for onsen. Many trips do both: two nights in Fukuoka, then a night in Beppu. JR Kyushu runs the Sonic limited express from Hakata to Beppu, so check its timetable for the ride time.
Is there an accommodation tax in Fukuoka?
Yes. Fukuoka City charges ¥200 per person, per night, on rates under ¥20,000, and ¥500 from ¥20,000. The tax is charged per person, so a double room pays it twice; check whether your booking total includes it.
