Piazza della Frutta is a medieval market square in Padua’s historic centre, beside Piazza delle Erbe and the Palazzo della Ragione. Fruit and vegetable stalls have traded here since the late 12th century, and the square still shifts character through the day: browse produce and look up at the surrounding historic buildings, then return in the evening for a drink among the bars. The Palazzo’s great hall and distinctive roof give the square an especially striking backdrop. Nearby, La Folperia serves octopus snacks, while Bar dei Osei is known for spritz.
A market square since the Middle Ages

Piazza della Frutta has been a fruit and vegetable market since the late 12th century. For centuries, it was part of Padua’s commercial centre, alongside Piazza delle Erbe, on the other side of the Palazzo della Ragione. Wooden stalls on wheels still bring produce to the square, keeping its market role visible in the historic centre.
The goods sold here once ranged well beyond fruit. Fish, game, eggs, poultry, roasted meat, vegetables and even falcons were among the wares traded in the square. The two stairways used to reach the Palazzo della Ragione took names from the goods sold nearby: Scala delle Erbe and Scala degli Osei.
The Palazzo della Ragione and the square’s details

The Palazzo della Ragione stands between Piazza della Frutta and Piazza delle Erbe. The building dates to 1218, and its upper floor was transformed at the start of the 14th century into a single great hall, known as Il Salone. Its unusual roof, shaped like an overturned ship’s hull, is one of the square’s defining features.
Look for a Romanesque column at the entrance to Via Breda. The square was once called Piazza del Peronio, after clogs and boots sold near the column. Its capital bears carvings of a pumpkin, a palm, a quince and a pear tree. Above it, an Istrian-stone block displays Padua’s coat of arms, with a cross and Saint Prosdocimus.
Market by day, meeting place in the evening
The market stalls make the square a place to browse fresh produce during the day. In the evening, bars and restaurants around the piazza draw people for drinks and conversation. You can experience both sides by visiting at different times.
For a bite, La Folperia serves octopus prepared in different ways, with prosecco suggested alongside it. Bar dei Osei is known for spritz. Just off Piazza delle Erbe, All’Ombra della Piazza serves cichetti, including fried calamari and shrimp, small pizzas, calzones, polpette and tartine.
