Stay in the old town near Piazza Tasso for a first visit, because the Circumvesuviana, buses and restaurants are within a short walk. Choose Marina Piccola for early ferries to Capri or the coast, Marina Grande for a village feel and seafood, and Sant'Agnello for greener, quieter streets with a train stop. Book early for June to September.

How to choose
Sorrento sits on a flat clifftop above two small harbors, with a railway station at one end of the old town and the ferries far below. The real choice is how close you want to be to the trains, to the boats and to the evening life. The Sorrento travel guide covers what to do, and this page settles where to sleep. For the bigger route, the Italy guide shows how the town fits with Naples, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast.
Three things shape the decision. The first is transport. If you plan to use the Circumvesuviana for Pompeii and Naples, a base near the station saves time on every trip. If you plan mostly boat days to Capri or the coast, a base near Marina Piccola puts the ferries at your door. The second is the cliff. The town is high above the sea, and a public lift and steep steps link the center and the port, so check the route with luggage. The third is noise: lanes near Piazza Tasso are lively into the night in summer, and light sleepers should ask for a room facing a courtyard.
Price bands below are relative: $ is a simple room, $$ a mid-range hotel or guesthouse and $$$ an upscale hotel with a view. They show how areas compare, not what you will pay on a given night. Many Italian hotels add a tourist tax at checkout, so read our guide to tourist taxes in Europe and check what your property charges.
1. Old Town and Piazza Tasso
The old town is the center of Sorrento: Piazza Tasso, the lanes with shops and restaurants, the cloister and the clifftop gardens with views across the bay. The Circumvesuviana station is a short walk, and buses to the coast leave from the same area. You can step out for dinner, an evening stroll and a walk to the sunset viewpoint without a taxi.
This is the best base for a first stay and for travelers without a car. You can reach Pompeii and Naples on the train, join a boat tour from the port and still sleep within a few minutes of everything. It is also the area with the most choice of rooms, from small guesthouses to larger hotels with pools and terraces.
The trade-offs are cost and noise. Rooms in the center are among the most expensive in town, and the lanes carry foot traffic until late in summer. A room with a balcony over the main street may look attractive and then keep you awake. Ask for a quiet side, and check whether the hotel has air conditioning, since July and August are hot.

Stay here when Piazza Tasso and the station on foot beat a quiet street.

2. Marina Piccola
Marina Piccola is the port at the foot of the cliff, where ferries and hydrofoils leave for Capri, Naples and the Amalfi Coast in season. It has beach platforms, a few restaurants and a handful of hotels and guesthouses. The old town is above, reached by a public lift and by steps or the road.
The port makes sense if you have an early boat or a late return. You walk to the pier, buy a ticket and board without a taxi, and in the evening you ride back down after dinner in town. Rooms here are usually cheaper than in the center, and you can swim from a platform or lido before breakfast.
The downside is the climb and the quiet. After the last boats, the harbor is calm and most of the lively places are up above. If the lift is closed for maintenance or the day is hot, the way back up is long, and with luggage it is awkward. Ask your hotel how guests usually reach it and what the last lift hours are.

3. Marina Grande
Marina Grande is the old fishing village on the west side of town, with brightly painted boats, a short beach and a row of seafood restaurants on the water. It feels more like a village than a resort, and at sunset the harbor is one of the most photographed spots in Sorrento.
It suits travelers who care about dinner and atmosphere more than a short walk to the train. Prices for rooms are mid-range, and you can eat fresh fish a few steps from your door. The old town is a short walk or ride away, so you can mix a village base with evenings in the center.
The drawbacks are distance and a steep road. The walk up to Piazza Tasso is longer than from other bases, and the lanes are narrow, so buses and taxis are slow in summer. If you plan to use the Circumvesuviana every day, a base closer to the station saves time.

4. Sant'Agnello and Piano
Sant'Agnello and Piano di Sorrento are the green suburbs east of the center, with villas, citrus gardens and hotels with pools. Sant'Agnello has its own train stop, so you reach Sorrento, Pompeii or Naples without going into town first. The mood is calm, residential and more local.
This is a good base for travelers with a car, since many hotels here have private parking, which is rare in the center. It also suits slow stays and families who want a garden, a pool and a quiet evening. A short train ride puts you in Sorrento's center in minutes.
The compromise is that you are not in the middle of things. Dinners in the old town mean a short ride or a walk, and the beach is a ride away. In peak season, check the last train or bus, since evening services thin out.

Which base for which trip
Choose by the three trips most visitors take from Sorrento. If your plan is Pompeii and Naples by train, stay in the old town or Sant'Agnello, where the Circumvesuviana is a short walk or ride, and plan a morning departure. If your plan is Capri and boat days on the coast, Marina Piccola removes the daily climb to the ferries, and a lido platform is steps away. If your plan is a quiet stay with a pool and a car for the peninsula, Sant'Agnello and Piano have more parking and more gardens than the center.
For a trip that is mostly dinner and an evening walk, the old town wins. For a couple that wants a harbor dinner and an early quiet night, Marina Grande is the better choice. For families, a hotel with a pool in Sant'Agnello usually works better than a small room in the old town, because children need somewhere to burn off energy. For a solo traveler on a budget, a guesthouse in the old town on a side lane gives the most for the least.
The cliff and the lift
Sorrento sits on a cliff, and the old town is far above the two harbors. A public lift and a road connect the center with Marina Piccola, and steps climb the cliff in a few places. The lift saves a steep climb, but it does not run all night, so check its hours before you plan a late dinner. If you are staying near the water and carrying luggage, ask the property whether it can send a porter, because the road is long and busy with cars and buses.
Marina Grande is further along the shore and has its own steep road up to the center. It is walkable, but not at the end of a long day in the heat. If you hold both a morning boat and a night in town, a base in the old town with a taxi to the port is simpler than a base at either harbor.
Mistakes to avoid
The first mistake is booking Marina Piccola for the night life. The harbor is quiet after the last boats, and the lively places sit above. The second is picking a cheap room in Piano di Sorrento and then paying for taxis. If the property is more than a short walk from the station, check the bus or train times for the hours you will return. The third is booking a room with a balcony over a main street in July. The noise can last until 1am.
The fourth is assuming a hotel near the station is also near the sea. Sorrento's coast is below the cliff, so a station room has a view of roofs and lanes rather than water. The fifth is booking only one night and then trying to fit Pompeii, Capri and the coast around it. Two nights is the minimum for any of those, and four or five is better if you want all three. The sixth is ignoring luggage. Soft bags handle cobbles and steps far better than hard cases.
Booking tips
Book as soon as your dates are firm for June to September and for Easter. Sorrento is a major base for visitors to the Amalfi Coast and Capri, so mid-range rooms sell out first, and many hotels close in winter. If you can travel in May or late September, you get warm weather with lower rates and shorter queues at the ferry ticket windows.
Check whether breakfast is included, whether the room has air conditioning and what the tourist tax adds at checkout. Ask the property how to reach it from the station or port with luggage, since some are up flights of steps. A backpack or soft case is easier than a rolling suitcase on the cobbles.
Most visitors use Sorrento as a base for day trips. Our guide to Sorrento to the Amalfi Coast by bus, ferry or car explains the options, and Positano or Amalfi or Sorrento helps you decide whether to sleep here or on the coast itself, and Sorrento or Naples as a base compares the two main bases for the ruins. For the island, read the Capri day trip guide. Compare an eSIM for data on arrival and a travel insurance policy that covers cancelled sailings.
For a longer route that links Sorrento with Rome, Florence or Venice, read Is a Eurail pass worth it? before you buy a pass, since point-to-point tickets often cost less in Italy.
Preguntas frecuentes
Where is the best place to stay in Sorrento?
The old town near Piazza Tasso, for most first stays. The Circumvesuviana station, the city buses, the restaurants and the lanes are all close, so you rarely need a taxi. Choose Sant'Agnello instead if you want quiet and a garden.
Is it better to stay in Sorrento or on the Amalfi Coast?
Sorrento for a base without a car, because trains, buses and ferries leave from town. Stay on the coast itself if you want to wake up in Positano or walk the cliff paths each morning, and accept the narrow roads and higher prices.
Is Marina Grande a good place to stay in Sorrento?
Yes if you want seafood on the harbor and a village mood. It is a steep walk or short ride to the center, so check the route with luggage and the last bus before you book.
Is it worth staying near the port in Sorrento?
If you have an early boat to Capri or the Amalfi Coast, yes. Marina Piccola puts the ferries at your door, and a public lift and steps climb to the center. It is quiet at night, so most people go up for dinner.
When should I book a hotel in Sorrento?
As soon as dates are fixed for June to September and for Easter. Rooms with sea views go first, and many hotels close in winter, so check opening dates for November to March.
