Beside Siena Cathedral at Piazza del Duomo, 8, the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo brings together art made for the cathedral and works tied to its history. Look for Duccio di Buoninsegna’s Maestà, alongside sculptures by Giovanni Pisano, Donatello and Jacopo della Quercia. The round stained-glass window at the entrance is another detail to notice. You can also climb the old cathedral façade, known as the Facciatone, for views over Siena. Arrive early if you want to avoid queues for the climb.

A museum formed from the cathedral project

The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo is beside Siena Cathedral and occupies part of the unfinished extension known as the Duomo Nuovo. The expansion began in 1339, but the 1348 plague halted the work. The space that was intended as the cathedral’s right aisle became the setting for the museum, established in 1869.

Much of the collection consists of works made for Siena Cathedral. The museum helps explain how the building’s artistic history is connected to the painters and sculptors whose works once belonged to it.

Duccio’s Maestà

The central work to seek out is the Maestà by Duccio di Buoninsegna, painted between 1308 and 1311 for the cathedral’s high altar. It was made as a large altarpiece and is regarded as Duccio’s masterpiece. His work is closely associated with the development of Sienese painting.

The collection also includes Gothic sculptures by Giovanni Pisano and Jacopo della Quercia, as well as work by Donatello. Some of the statues once stood on the cathedral’s exterior. Look for the round stained-glass window at the museum entrance, too.

Climbing the Facciatone

The old façade of the abandoned cathedral extension, called the Facciatone, is the place to climb for a broad view across Siena. There can be a wait to go up, so build that into your visit, especially if your schedule is tight. The climb is a distinct part of the museum visit; if you are short on time or mainly interested in seeing the Duomo from outside, you may prefer to spend your time elsewhere.
