Forte di Belvedere is a 16th-century fortress above Florence, on the Boboli hill behind Palazzo Pitti. Its elevated position brings the Arno, Ponte Vecchio, the Duomo and the surrounding hills into view. In summer, the fort opens as a venue for temporary contemporary art exhibitions and cultural events. Walk through the historic grounds, then stop at the small café for a drink or snack. The uphill approach is steep, so allow for the climb when planning your visit.
A Medici fortress above Florence

Forte di Belvedere stands on the highest part of the Boboli hill, behind Palazzo Pitti and close to the gardens of Boboli and Bardini. Bernardo Buontalenti designed it in the late 16th century for Grand Duke Ferdinando I de’ Medici. Its military purpose was to help defend Florence from invasion and rebellion, while its position also gave the Medici a commanding view of the city and the surrounding countryside.
The fort was built as a defensive outpost near the old city walls. Its setting gives it a different relationship with Florence from the city’s lower streets: the historic centre lies below, with the Arno and its bridges crossing the view. The building is one of Florence’s two fortresses and remains an important example of the city’s military architecture.
What you can see from the grounds

The view extends across Florence to landmarks including the Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio and Ponte Vecchio, as well as the Arno and the hills around the city. On a clear day, the panorama reaches towards Fiesole and Settignano. From this side of the centre, the outlook differs from the one at Piazzale Michelangelo.
The fort’s grounds and battlements provide places to take in the panorama. Around sunset, the view changes as the light falls over the city. A broad staircase to the left of the copy of Michelangelo’s David is noted as a particularly good place to watch the sun go down. Arriving early can help you find a spot there.
Summer exhibitions and cultural events
Forte di Belvedere reopens as a temporary art space during the summer months. Exhibitions have included contemporary sculpture and photography, with artworks displayed around the grounds and, in some seasons, related installations at Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio. The programme changes, so check what is on before planning a visit around a particular exhibition.
A small café serves as a place to stop for a snack or drink after exploring the grounds and art. It operates seasonally alongside the exhibitions. The steep walk uphill is part of the approach from the Palazzo Pitti area, so factor it into your route, especially on a hot day.
