Doddabetta Peak

Doddabetta Peak is the top of the Nilgiri Hills, about 10 km from Ooty town.

Doddabetta Peak is the top of the Nilgiri Hills, about 10 km from Ooty town. A road reaches the summit, so you can drive or take a cab, then walk a short stretch to the watchtower. From the top you look over Ooty, rolling hills and valleys, and on clear days the view can reach the Coimbatore plains. The telescope house helps you pick out details across the landscape. Walk the trail through shola forest on the way up, and bring a jacket, because the summit is cold and windy.

Where the peak sits

Doddabetta Peak

Doddabetta is the highest point in the Nilgiri range, and it sits where the Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats meet. The name is usually given as big mountain, which suits a peak that rises above the ridges around it. The slopes are covered in dense forest, with sholas, the patches of evergreen forest found in the hills, and sub-alpine shrubs near the top.

The area is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, a region known for its fragile and varied ecosystem. Trekkers and photographers come here for the forest and the open views over the hills.

Getting up and down

Doddabetta Peak
Doddabetta Peak

The peak is about 10 km from Ooty on the Ooty-Kotagiri Road. Most visitors drive or take a cab to the entry gate, where tickets are sold and vehicles need an entry pass. A short walk then leads from the parking area to the viewpoint and watchtower. Parking near the entrance is small and fills up at busy times, so arriving early helps.

Walkers can start from town. The walk from Ooty is around 9 km, and the grassy trail to the summit is a tiring climb at this altitude. Take water and rest at the spots where the views open up.

At the summit

The watchtower gives an elevated view across the hills. The telescope house nearby has telescopes for a closer look at distant villages, forest and hill ranges. Along the approach, small shops sell tea, coffee, snacks, chocolate, eucalyptus oil and souvenirs.

Toilets and tea stalls at the top are basic. Mobile reception is weak at this height, so download maps or plans before you climb.

What the view depends on

Cloud and fog are common here, and when they settle in, the valleys can disappear from view. Even then, the mist makes the walk quiet and atmospheric, and the cold breeze is part of the experience.

On clear days you can see Ooty below, the Karnataka border, waterfalls in the distance and the plains of Coimbatore. Early morning and late afternoon give the best light for photographs. Nilgiri langurs live on the slopes, so keep an eye out on the walk.
