Kathisma Beach lies on the west coast of Lefkada, about 15 km from Lefkada Town and a few kilometres from the village of Agios Nikitas. It is one of the longest beaches on the island, with fine sand and small pebbles, clear turquoise water and mountains behind it. Sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars and restaurants line the sand, and some venues have a pool. Paragliding and other water sports are on offer. Come for the colour of the sea and the sunset, and plan your day around the wind and the crowds.

Getting to Kathisma Beach

Kathisma Beach
Kathisma Beach

Kathisma Beach is on the west coast of Lefkada, about 15 km from Lefkada Town. It lies a few kilometres from Agios Nikitas. Coming from Agios Nikitas, head south and turn right after about 3 km, following the signs.

By car, the road runs down to the seafront, so you can park close to the sand. KTEL buses from Lefkada Town also serve the beach, and taxis are an option. Some bus lines do not run every day, so check the timetable before you plan around one.

Until recently the way down was a rough, rocky track. A paved road now leads to the tavernas and hotels along the shore.

A beach that has changed

Kathisma Beach
Kathisma Beach

Kathisma was once a quiet strand favoured by campers and naturists. Today it is one of Lefkada's most developed beaches, with rows of sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars and restaurants along the sand. It draws many younger visitors in July and August, and music plays along the seafront.

The beach is wide and long, so you can usually find a spot away from the busiest bars.

Facilities and services

Sunbeds and umbrellas are rented from the beach bars and facilities. Prices depend on the spot, and rentals have been quoted between about 10 and 25 euros.

Some facilities include showers, changing cabins and parking in their fees, and a few beach bars have a pool. Lifeguards are present, and there are coffee bars, restaurants and a water sports centre.

Paragliding and parasailing take off from the mountains above and land on the sand, so you can watch them from the beach.

Sea and waves

The water is clear enough to see the sandy bottom in many places, and it shifts from turquoise to deeper blue. The sea can drop off quickly close to the shore.

Waves are often strong, especially when the wind blows, and on some days they reach about 80 cm. On such days, going deeper than knee level can be difficult. On calmer days the water is easier for swimming.

The sand is finer in some parts than others, so choose your spot with the shade and the sea in mind.
