The best months for Corfu are late May, June, September and early October, when the sea is warm, businesses are open and the roads are manageable. July and August are hot, busy and expensive. Corfu is greener and wetter than the Aegean islands, so winters are rainy and many beach businesses close. Orthodox Easter is the cultural high point in town.

The short answer: late May to June, or September
The best time to visit Corfu is late May and June, or September and early October. The sea is warm enough to swim, the tavernas and boats are open, and the roads and beaches are less crowded than in July and August. If you want one answer, pick the first half of June or the second half of September. The Corfu travel guide covers the island, and the best time to visit Greece page shows how Corfu compares with Athens and the Aegean.
Corfu behaves differently from the Aegean islands. It is in the Ionian Sea and gets more rain, mostly between late autumn and early spring, which gives the hills their olive-and-cypress green. That is a bonus in May, when wildflowers are out, and a drawback in winter, when the days are wet and cool. The Ionian also has gentler summer winds than the Cyclades, so ferries and beaches are usually less disrupted.
Decide by what you want. If your trip is about swimming, aim for June to September. If you want walking, villages and fewer people, choose May or October. If you care about culture and quiet, the old town is open all year, and Easter is a highlight. The comparison below sets out each season, and the sections after it explain what to expect.

The table gives a broad picture. Weather is typical rather than guaranteed, and a hot spell or a storm can change a day. Prices follow demand, so expect the highest rates in July and August and around Easter, and better value in the shoulder months.

Spring: April and May
Spring is the quiet, green season. In April the island is at its most colorful, with wildflowers in the olive groves and fresh green hills, and the old town is calm. Days are mild, evenings are cool and the sea is still cold, so it is a season for walking, driving and sightseeing rather than swimming. Many beach tavernas and boat trips open in late April or May, so check that your base is open.
May is the sweet spot for travelers who want warm days without the heat. The sea warms through the month, the light is long, and prices are still moderate. By late May the beach season is under way, and the roads are quiet. If you can pick, go after the middle of the month, when more businesses are open and the water is less shocking.
Spring also brings rain showers, especially in April, so pack a light waterproof layer. They pass quickly, and the hills look their best afterward. Easter often falls in April or early May, which changes the picture for a few weeks, as described below.
Summer: June to August
June is the best summer month. Days are long, the weather is dry and warm, the sea is comfortable and the crowds are building but not at their peak. It suits beach holidays, boat days and the full island loop in our Corfu in 5 days plan, and rooms are easier to find than in July.
July and August are hot, busy and expensive. Roads fill, parking at the best beaches becomes a daily chore, and cruise ships bring crowds to Corfu Town. The strategy that works is to start early, rest in the middle of the day and keep evenings for dinner. The north-east coast and the west coast are both popular, so book rooms early; our where to stay in Corfu guide shows how to choose between them. If you must travel in August, stay on a quieter coast, avoid mid-morning arrivals at big beaches and keep sunscreen and water with you.
Heat is the other issue. Midday in July and August can be uncomfortable for sightseeing, so plan the Old Fortress and the Achilleion for the morning and swim in the afternoon. The sea is at its warmest in August, which makes late-day swims a highlight.
Autumn: September and October
September is the favorite month for many travelers. The sea holds the summer's warmth, the beaches thin out after the first week and rates drop. Evenings are mild, and the island feels relaxed. It is the best month for combining swimming with sightseeing, and a good choice if you are flexible on dates.
October is a mixed month. The first half can be warm and sunny, with the sea still pleasant, but the weather turns more changeable as the month goes on, and the first big autumn rains are common. Many beach businesses and boat trips begin to close, so check what is open before you book a coast base. October suits travelers who want quiet and a lower price and who accept a chance of rain.
By November the season is over. Rain becomes more frequent, the days are short and many hotels in the north and west close for the winter.
Winter: November to March
Winter is wet and quiet. Corfu gets a lot of rain, which keeps the island green but makes beach days unlikely. Many beach hotels, boats and tavernas close, and the choice of places to stay is smaller. On the other hand, Corfu Town stays open, with restaurants, cafés and museums, and the old town is calm and atmospheric.
It is a reasonable choice for a short city break, a food trip or a quiet escape, and prices are the lowest of the year. Pack waterproofs and layers, and check ferry and flight schedules, which are thinner in winter. If you want sun and swimming, choose another season.
What to pack and what is open in each season
Packing follows the season more than the calendar. From May to September, bring light clothes, a hat, sunscreen, water shoes for the pebble coves of the northeast and a light layer for breezy evenings on the west coast. In April and October, add a waterproof jacket and closed shoes for wet cobbles in the old town, which turn slippery in rain. From November to March, pack for real rain: a proper jacket, an umbrella and shoes with grip.
Opening dates matter as much as the weather. Beach tavernas, boat operators and many small hotels in the north and west open between mid April and May and close by late October, though the exact dates vary by business. Corfu Town keeps most restaurants, shops and museums open all year, with shorter hours in winter. If you plan a coast base outside the summer months, check that your hotel, a nearby taverna and the supermarket are open before you commit.
Transport follows the same pattern. Flights and ferries are most frequent from late spring to early autumn and thinner in winter, and buses on the west coast run less often outside the main season. A rental car is more useful in shoulder months than in peak weeks, because roads are quieter, and our Getting around Greece page explains how to compare options. If you are choosing a week, the Corfu in 5 days route works in May, June, September and early October.
Easter in Corfu
Orthodox Easter is the cultural high point of the year. The date changes every year and often differs from Western Easter, so check the calendar before you book. In Corfu Town, Holy Week brings processions with brass bands, and on Holy Saturday, a well-known local tradition sees people throw clay pots from windows in the old town. Palm Sunday and Holy Saturday also bring processions for the island's patron saint, Spyridon.
If you want to see it, book early, because rooms in town fill with visitors and returning locals. Expect crowds in the lanes and some businesses closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The weather in April is mild but changeable, so bring a rain layer. Our Corfu Town guide has more on the old town, and our connectivity guide can help you stay online for schedules.
