Hamburg’s Museum of Art and Industry, known locally as the MKG, is near the Hauptbahnhof at Steintorplatz. Founded in 1874, it brings together art, design and history across collections that range from ancient objects to modern works. Look for European and East Asian applied art, furniture, silver, photography, fashion and musical instruments. German- and English-language wall texts help explain the displays, and interactive features include a section about pearls. The museum is large, so allow time to explore its different collections.

The Museum of Art and Industry, or MKG, was founded in 1874. Its model was London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, and its collections bring together fine, applied and decorative arts from antiquity to the present day. The museum is at Steintorplatz, just south of Hamburg Hauptbahnhof and between the station and the city’s central library.

The collection covers more than 4,000 years of human history. European and East Asian art have particular emphasis, alongside objects and works from other traditions. The range makes this a place to explore how art and design appear in everyday objects as well as in sculpture, prints and photographs.

Collections include northern German china, furniture and silver, as well as applied art from East Asia. Other areas cover Islamic art, fashion, photography and musical instruments. Works by Oskar Kokoschka are also part of the collection. The displays span historical objects and modern design, so you can move between very different periods and forms of making.

A section about pearls adds an interactive element to the visit. Wall texts in German and English provide context for the displays. The museum is larger than it may appear from outside, so take time to explore the sections that interest you rather than expecting to see everything quickly.
