Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate stands on Place Rossetti in Vieux-Nice, a short walk from Cours Saleya. Step inside from the busy square for a quieter look at its Baroque interior, with ten decorated chapels, a separate baptism chapel, artworks, statues and an ornate altar. Above the Old Town, the cathedral’s patterned dome rises 39 metres. Built from the mid-17th century into the early 18th, it is dedicated to Nice’s patron saint and holds her relics. Entry is free; allow 20 to 40 minutes to explore.
A cathedral built for a growing city

The cathedral occupies a site with an earlier church, Sainte-Marie du Château, consecrated in 1049. That building was later demolished to make room for a larger church as the city’s population grew. Construction of the present cathedral began in the mid-17th century and continued into the early 18th. It was consecrated as a cathedral in 1699.
Dedicated to Saint Reparata, patron saint of Nice, the church holds her relics. They were brought to Nice in 1060. The cathedral has remained an important place of worship in the city and sits directly beside Place Rossetti, among the narrow streets of Vieux-Nice.
Baroque details inside and out

The exterior gives you a first look at the cathedral’s Baroque design, but the interior is notably richly decorated. Look for the ornate altar, artworks and statues, then take time to visit the ten decorated chapels. A separate chapel is used for baptisms.
The tiled dome is one of the building’s most distinctive details. Its multicoloured pattern rises 39 metres above the Old Town and can be seen from the square. Inside, the chapels and their decoration reward a slower look if you have more than a few minutes to spare.
Planning a short visit
The cathedral is at 3 Place Rossetti, close to Cours Saleya and surrounded by the lanes and squares of the Old Town. Its calm interior makes a brief visit a natural pause during a walk around the neighbourhood. You can also combine it with time in Place Rossetti.
Admission is free. A quick look takes about 20 to 25 minutes; allow 30 to 40 minutes to explore the chapels and details without rushing. The cathedral is reported to close at 6 PM, so plan to arrive at least an hour beforehand and check the current schedule before your visit. Earlier in the afternoon is a useful choice if you want to avoid the late-day crowds.
