En resumen

Philip Goldson International Airport is about 25 minutes from the water taxi terminal, per the main operator, and boats take about 45 minutes to Caye Caulker and about 1 hour 30 minutes to San Pedro. Small planes leave from the international airport and the municipal airstrip, with check-in at least 30 minutes before departure and a photo ID. Allow generous connection times and expect screening.

Two airports and two ways out of Belize City

Almost every trip in Belize starts with the same question at the airport: boat or plane? The Belize City travel guide sets out the city's role as a hub. Read it alongside the Belize guide if you are still deciding where to go, and the Caye Caulker guide if the island is your first stop.

Belize City has two airports. Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE) handles all international flights. Tropic Air places it about 10 miles (16 km) from the center of the city, in Ladyville. The Belize City Municipal Airport (TZA) is used only for domestic flights and sits about a mile (1.5 km) outside downtown. Tropic Air operates hubs at both, and Maya Island Air lists both on its destination pages. Where your flight leaves from depends on the airline and the route, so read the airport code on your ticket before you book a taxi.

The water taxi is a different system. The main operator, San Pedro Belize Express, runs from the Belize Marine Terminal at 111 North Front Street, downtown. A boat suits an island trip with a bag you can carry. A plane suits the south, which the main operator does not serve, and it suits anyone with a tight onward connection. The sections below give the numbers for each.

From the international airport to the water taxi terminal

The operator's FAQ puts the ride from Philip Goldson International Airport to its Belize City terminal at approximately 25 minutes. It offers a shared transfer for USD 25 for the first person and USD 10 for each additional person and asks private-transfer customers to email for a quotation. Treat the shared price as a figure to confirm at booking, since rates change. You can also take a registered taxi: UK government advice says to use only taxis with green licence plates, to ask the fare before you get in and to expect to pay in cash.

Time the transfer against the boat, not the flight. Clearing immigration and customs can take 30 minutes to an hour, according to Maya Island Air's FAQ, and bags come after that. Add the 25-minute ride and the operator's request to arrive 30 to 45 minutes early, and a boat that leaves two hours after your plane lands is a tight fit. A late-afternoon landing and a morning boat the next day is a safer pairing, and the overnight question is covered in overnight in Belize City or straight on.

If you land at night, do not plan to reach the terminal for a boat that left hours ago. Arrange the first night in advance, and keep your hotel's name and address saved on your phone so the taxi driver and you agree on the destination before the car moves.

The water taxi: what to know before you buy

The operator lists three durations: about 45 minutes between Belize City and Caye Caulker, about 1 hour 30 minutes between Belize City and San Pedro, and about 30 minutes between Caye Caulker and San Pedro. Its Belize City page says there are multiple daily departures and that the full timetable sits on its schedule page, with a recommendation to book online ahead of peak travel. Walk-in customers can pay by major credit card, and the operator asks you to tell your bank about international travel first.

Rules for luggage are precise. All luggage must be checked in at least 15 minutes before departure with a uniformed employee, who tags it by destination: yellow for Belize City, pink for San Pedro, orange for Caye Caulker and blue for Chetumal. Each passenger gets one checked bag up to 23 kg (50 lb) and one small carry-on that fits under the seat, and oversized or overweight bags are charged at cargo rates. Cash, camera equipment, jewelry, medication, eyeglasses, legal documents and electronics should not go in checked luggage. Liability for lost or damaged checked bags is capped at USD 50 per passenger, which is another reason to carry valuables yourself.

The operator also lists child rules for domestic trips: infants under one travel free as lap children, and children aged four to ten pay a children's rate. Groups of more than 12 get one free ticket. Wheelchairs are available, and passengers who need help should tell a supervisor or captain before boarding.

Small planes: check-in, security and bags

Two airlines run most domestic flights. Tropic Air describes itself as having more than 200 daily flights, and its pages list daily flights to Placencia and several flights a day to Dangriga, which serves Hopkins, from both Belize City airports. It lists hourly flights between the municipal airport and San Pedro. Maya Island Air operates daily scheduled flights to San Pedro, Dangriga (Hopkins) and Placencia, and says Placencia is only a forty-minute flight. It adds that it flies five times a day to Dangriga from Belize City, Placencia and Punta Gorda.

One change affects southern routes. Tropic Air announced on 30 September 2026 that its Punta Gorda station will close effective 1 November 2026, and Maya Island Air still lists Punta Gorda on its destinations page. If your plan reaches Toledo by air, confirm the current airline and schedule before you book anything that depends on it.

Check-in rules are firm. Tropic Air requires domestic passengers to check in at least 30 minutes before departure and to show valid government-issued photo ID that matches the reservation; digital copies are not accepted. Maya Island Air recommends arriving at least 30 minutes before the flight and says its website does not allow same-day bookings, which need a 24-hour window or an email to the airline. Maya Island Air's FAQ adds that flights are subject to stops without notice, a reminder that small-plane schedules flex.

Since 17 April 2025, Tropic Air has applied enhanced security at all domestic stations: every passenger and personal item is screened before boarding and may be physically searched. Gate-checking a personal item is free. UK advice notes that the Belize Airports Authority announced security enhancements across municipal airstrips after the hijacking of a small passenger aircraft on an internal flight on 17 April 2025, and suggests allowing extra time. Build that margin into the schedule.

Baggage on small aircraft is strict. Maya Island Air allows one checked bag up to 50 pounds and 62 linear inches, plus a carry-on of up to 15 pounds that fits snugly under the seat, and handles excess and oversized items on a space-available basis. Tropic Air sets allowances by fare, accepts up to two personal items that fit on the lap, and says bags over 62 linear inches (157 cm) may be refused on some flights. Soft-sided duffels pack more easily than hard cases on both.

Boat or plane: which fits your route

The two options overlap only on the islands. For Caye Caulker and San Pedro you can take either, and the choice depends on bags, budget and tolerance for early starts. For Placencia and Hopkins the plane is the realistic option unless you drive.

Choose the boat for a first island night with one or two bags and a flexible start. Choose the plane for the south and for any day when a long road would eat the schedule. Choose neither at night: there is no reason to cut the margin when the safer option is a bed in the city and an early start.

Heading south by road

The road is the third option and the one with the most variables. The Belize Audubon Society's Cockscomb page gives a useful picture: from Belize City, take the Western Highway, turn onto the Hummingbird Highway, then onto the Southern Highway, and the Maya Center turnoff is about 20 minutes beyond the junction. It puts the journey at about 2.5 hours by vehicle. Buses from Belize City toward Punta Gorda stop in Dangriga and can stop at Maya Center if requested, in about 3.5 hours.

UK advice adds the cautions. Roads have potholes, unpaved shoulders and few lane markings, are often unlit and lack emergency assistance, and temporary bridges and causeways can flood in severe weather, particularly in Stann Creek and Toledo. Public buses are not well maintained and many lack seatbelts. A UK photocard driving licence is valid for up to three months. Drive in daylight, ask your lodging about road conditions, and read renting a car abroad for the insurance questions. The Southern Belize guide covers where the road leads.

Connecting from an international flight

Connection times are where small-plane trips go wrong. Maya Island Air recommends at least 3 hours between an international flight and its onward flight, and at least 1 hour between domestic flights. Tropic Air advises a minimum of 2 hours when connecting from another airline's international flight into a Tropic Air flight, and a minimum of 3 hours when going the other way, to an international carrier. Its pages describe a complimentary shuttle between terminals, with one scheduled departure from the Tropic Air terminal per day, so ask the agent at arrival.

A same-day international connection also carries a time risk of its own. If your inbound flight is delayed, Tropic Air says it will rebook you on the next available flight with open seats, which can mean the following day. Keep that in mind if you hold a non-refundable ticket, and consider whether travel insurance with delay cover and a phone with data from an eSIM would help you rebook from the arrival hall.

Going on to Mexico by water

The same water taxi operator runs an international route between San Pedro and Chetumal. Its FAQ says customs and immigration officers are present at both ports and that fees are paid to the border authorities, not included in the ticket. The Belize departure fee is BZD 40 or USD 20, cash only, and UK advice confirms the same figure for leaving by land or by water to Guatemala or Mexico. The operator adds that passengers coming from Chetumal must overnight at Caye Caulker or San Pedro before taking a boat to Belize City. Plan the Mexico leg as an island-to-island trip rather than a day out from the mainland.

When the weather or the schedule changes

Storm warnings can disrupt boats and planes together, so watch the national weather service and keep a hotel night in the city flexible. Maya Island Air requires changes at least three hours before departure to avoid extra change fees on its lower fares, and cancellations at least 24 hours ahead, so read the fare rules before you buy the cheapest class.

Mistakes to avoid

The usual errors are predictable. Travelers book a boat too close to a landing and miss it. They pack cash or medication in a checked bag. They show up at a small-plane counter with a phone photo of a passport, which Tropic Air does not accept. They assume Punta Gorda service is unchanged. They pick a night road trip to save a hotel night, against UK advice about unlit roads. And they forget that a land or water departure to Mexico or Guatemala needs BZD 40 or USD 20 in cash. Fix those six and the transfer is simple.
