Windmill The New Parrot, also called Nieuwe Papegaai, stands beside a canal on the eastern edge of Bruges’ historic centre. It is one of four historic windmills along the paths of Kruisvest, where you can walk or cycle past the mills and enjoy views over the water. The mill itself is a stop for its setting and exterior; the surrounding route is the bigger draw if you want a quiet break from the centre. Pair it with the other mills for a leisurely walk.
A mill moved to Kruisvest

Nieuwe Papegaai was built in 1790 at a different location as a wooden oil mill. It later worked as a grain and brick mill, changed private owners several times, and eventually fell into disuse.
The city acquired the deteriorated mill and rebuilt it at its present site in 1970. Here, it stands north of Bonne Chiere and Sint-Janshuismolen and south of Koeleweimolen.
Following the windmills

The mill sits along the canal on the eastern outskirts of Bruges’ historic centre. Paths run beside the water, giving walkers and cyclists a route past all four mills between Kruispoort and Dampoort.
A leisurely walk of 20 to 30 minutes covers the four mills. Allow more time if you want to stop along the way; cycling lets you pass them in a few minutes.
