Purling Brook Falls is a tall waterfall in Springbrook National Park, in the Gold Coast hinterland. From Gwongorella Picnic Area, you can take a short walk to a lookout or follow the circuit through open eucalypt forest and subtropical rainforest to see the falls from the gorge. The track crosses a suspension bridge and passes several viewpoints, with the waterfall especially impressive after rain. Allow around two hours for the circuit, which descends to the base before climbing back to the plateau.
The circuit from Gwongorella Picnic Area

The Purling Brook Falls circuit starts at Gwongorella Picnic Area in Springbrook National Park. It is about four kilometres and takes roughly two hours to complete. The track begins near the top of the waterfall, so you can reach viewpoints early in the walk before descending into the gorge.
The route passes through open eucalypt forest, including New England ash, then enters subtropical rainforest. Along the way, small creeks and additional views add variety to the walk. The path descends to the valley floor, where the falls can be seen from below, then crosses a suspension bridge. From there, a steady climb returns to the plateau and picnic area.
Lookouts, cliffs and the waterfall

The falls plunge from the Springbrook Plateau into a deep gorge. Lookouts near the start give views from above, including the top of the cascade. The circuit brings you closer to the falls from below, where the suspension bridge provides another vantage point.
The gorge has contrasting rock formations: pale rhyolite cliffs rise above dark basalt. An early lookout also looks towards the Nimmel Range, Little Nerang Dam, Hinze Dam, the Gold Coast and the ocean. After rain, more water pours over the falls, making the cascade more striking.
Choosing a route and preparing for the walk
You do not need to complete the full circuit to see Purling Brook Falls. A lookout near the start gives a view of the upper falls, while the longer route reaches the gorge and bridge. The circuit can also be extended with the return walk to Warringa Pool, adding about two kilometres.
The route goes downhill into the gorge and uphill on the way back, with steep sections and stairs. The track can become muddy and slippery after rain, and conditions can change quickly. Wear sturdy footwear and keep clear of the cliff edges. Allow time for the return climb, particularly if you plan to take breaks along the way.
