Buchan Point is a headland at the northern end of the coast near Palm Cove, with a beach, picnic areas and a playground nearby. The rocky point gives you an open view across the Coral Sea, especially at sunset, while the shoreline stretches south towards Clifton Beach. The area also has a quieter beach described as adult-only, suited to sunbathing. Come for a coastal walk, a picnic or a relaxed stop by the water; check conditions before paddling in the shallows.
The coast around Buchan Point

Buchan Point sits at the northern end of a long stretch of coast that continues south through Clifton Beach and towards Kewarra Beach. The shoreline changes direction along the way: it faces east at the point, then turns northeast farther south.
The beach between the headland and Clifton Beach is about two kilometres long. The wider coastal stretch from Buchan Point to Kewarra Beach covers about 5.5 kilometres.
How the area got its name

In the late nineteenth century, Buchans Estate had an orchard plantation here, with numerous palm trees. The beach became known as Buchans Beach, then Palm Beach. To avoid confusion with Palm Beach locations on the Gold Coast and in New South Wales, it was renamed Palm Cove.
