Construction began in the 19th century, and the cathedral was completed in 1882. It was built to mark 900 years of Christianity in Kyivan Rus, following the baptism of Prince Volodymyr in 988. The church is named for the prince, who introduced Christianity to the realm.

Its Neo-Byzantine design is immediately visible from the boulevard. The yellow exterior is topped by seven domes: six blue and one gold. Arched windows and the bright facade set it apart from the surrounding city streets.
