In breve

Stay on Ao Nang Beach Road for a first trip, because the tour desks, restaurants and the boats to Railay are close by. Choose Noppharat Thara, 6 km north, for a quieter beach, Klong Muang for a resort stay with a pool, and Nam Mao and the town for the lowest rates. Book the late December to early January peak months far ahead; rooms are usually cheaper in the wet months, but boats are less reliable.

How to choose

Ao Nang is a strip of beach on the Andaman coast of Krabi, and where you sleep decides how much of your trip is spent in taxis. The Ao Nang travel guide covers the sights and the island boats, and this page settles the base. For the wider picture of the country, start with the Thailand guide.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) describes the area plainly: to most visitors, "town" is Ao Nang, a seaside strip of guesthouses, hotels, bars, restaurants and souvenir shops that keeps growing and now spreads north into Noppharat Thara, whose quiet, shady beach is part of a national park. It calls Ao Nang the major launching point for boat trips to nearby islands and to Phra Nang Cape, where Railay Beach is. That one description already gives you the map: a busy center, a quieter beach to the north, and a boat ride to the cliffs.

Four things decide the choice. The first is noise: the central strip has the bars and the late traffic, while the northern beaches are calmer after dark. The second is whether you want to walk to dinner or are happy to eat at your resort. The third is the sea. Rooms in all four areas share the same rainy season, so the base does not change when boats run. The fourth is how you arrive: there is a road transfer from Krabi's airport and no train, so a pre-arranged ride is the easiest.

The price bands below are relative. $ is a simple guesthouse or small hotel, $$ a mid-range hotel or apartment-style stay, $$$ a resort with a pool and sea access. Rates change sharply with the calendar, so check the total, including taxes and any resort fee, at booking.

The central strip is where the town happens. Restaurants, tour desks, massage shops and minimarts sit within a few minutes of the sand, and the boats to Railay and the islands leave from the waterfront nearby. For a first trip it is the most efficient base, because you spend your time seeing Krabi rather than commuting to it.

The trade-off is noise and crowds. Traffic on the beach road runs late, bars play music into the night, and the nearest stretch of sand is busy with boats and sunbeds. If you sleep lightly, ask for a room at the back or on an upper floor, and read recent guest reviews for comments on noise rather than relying on the listing photos. The UK government's advice for Thailand notes that the sale of alcohol is restricted between midnight and 11am except in licensed hotels, airports and authorized entertainment venues, so late-night noise does tend to taper, but only to a point.

Property types are mostly mid-range hotels, small apartment blocks and guesthouses, with a few larger resorts toward the ends of the strip. Many have a small pool and breakfast; fewer have a beach in front of them. Check how far the hotel really is from the sand, since "beach access" can mean a ten-minute walk.

Evita se you want a long empty beach or a silent room at night. Noppharat Thara or Klong Muang suit you better.

For sand and boats within a short walk, this strip is a good fit

2. Noppharat Thara

Best for
Quiet sand, couples

Noppharat Thara is the long beach north of the center, inside the national park. TAT puts it 6 km from Ao Nang and describes a famous white sandy beach about 3 km long, lined with casuarinas and coconut groves, paved with tiny seashells. It adds that the beach was formerly called Hat Khlong Haeng, meaning dried canal beach, because the canal dries up at low tide and the area turns into a long beach. That makes it a good lesson in tides: what you see at high water is not what you get at low.

Boats in a bay on Phi Phi Island below green mountains under golden clouds, Ao Nang

It suits couples, families with small children and anyone who wants a beach morning without boat traffic. Distance is the cost. Ao Nang center is a short songthaew, taxi or ride-app trip away, and restaurants closer to the beach are fewer. You will probably eat at your hotel on some nights and ride into town on others. Costs for those rides add up over a week, so factor them into the price comparison.

Hotels range from small guesthouses to larger beach resorts. The better ones have restaurants, pools and a good breakfast, which matters more here than in the center. If you want to mix quiet mornings with an island tour, most operators collect from the northern beaches, so confirm the pickup point when you book.

Evita se you want to walk to bars, shops and the market after dinner. The beach road is better.

3. Klong Muang

Best for
Resorts, long sunsets
Airport
Road transfer, no train

Taxi or resort shuttle
Price band
$$$

Klong Muang is a resort coast further north-west, beyond Noppharat Thara. The beach is long and quiet, sunsets are open, and most of the large resorts here have pools, spas and several restaurants on site. It is the best base for a resort week, a honeymoon or a family trip where the hotel is the main attraction. Check the map and the property's own distance to Ao Nang before you commit.

You trade independence for comfort. There are few places to eat outside the resorts, so the hotel sets the pace of your evenings. Getting to Ao Nang for dinner or a boat departure means a taxi or a resort shuttle, and costs and times vary, so ask about the shuttle schedule before you book.

If you want a few island days from here, ask the resort which operators it works with and where the boats leave from. Some departures start from the main piers near Ao Nang rather than from the resort, and pick-ups can add time to the day.

Evita se you want local food, street life or the cheapest rate. A base in town fits better.

4. Nam Mao and the town

Best for
Budget, longer stays
Airport
Road transfer, no train
To the beach
Short walk or ride
Price band
$

Nam Mao and the streets behind the beach road are where the lowest rates tend to be. Guesthouses, small hotels and apartments sit a few streets inland, and most are a short walk or a quick scooter or songthaew ride from the sand. For a long stay or a tight budget, they are the practical choice.

The cost is character. There is no sea view, the streets are busy with delivery and tour vehicles, and the beach feels like a separate trip. Rooms vary widely, so check the photos, the air conditioning and reviews for water pressure and noise. Small places often ask for cash or a deposit on arrival, so ask what is accepted.

This area suits people who spend their days on island tours or climbing at Railay and use the room mainly to sleep. If that is you, saving the difference on the bed buys another tour. If you plan long, slow beach days, pay for a base on the sand.

Evita se you want to step out onto the sand or to have a pool as your day base. Pay more for a beach area.

Which base for which trip?

Match the base to the plan. A first trip with island tours and a night on Railay fits the beach road. A week of beach and pool with small children fits Noppharat Thara or a Klong Muang resort. A budget stay built around climbing, tours and cheap meals fits Nam Mao. If you cannot choose, split the stay: three nights on the beach road to see Krabi, then two in a quieter beach hotel to rest.

Your tour plan should shape the choice too. The island tours from Ao Nang guide compares the main boat days, and pick-up points differ by area. If the cliffs of Railay are the real goal, read Ao Nang or Railay before you book, because TAT puts Railay about 20 minutes from Ao Nang by boat, and some travelers decide to sleep there instead.

Rain, rough seas and the backup plan

The UK government says the rainy season in Thailand is generally from May to October, that weather has become unpredictable, and that periods of intense rain can occur at any time. It adds that boats can sink or collide, usually because of overloading, poor maintenance or rough seas, particularly in monsoon season, and that people have drowned in strong riptides. Lifeguards and a flag system operate at designated beaches, and red flags mean stay out of the water. Jellyfish can swim close to shore, especially from May to October, and stings can be fatal, so take local advice from your hotel.

So choose a base with a plan for a bad-weather day. The beach road wins here: restaurants, massage shops and tour desks are within walking distance, and a road transfer to Krabi Town or an inland stop still works when boats do not. TAT lists the Emerald Pool, a swimmable pool in the Khao Pra-Bang Khram Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Khlong Thom salt hot springs among Krabi's attractions, both inland. Krabi Town, according to TAT, has the Maharaj Walking Street market from Friday to Sunday evenings and the Chao Fah Pier night market, so a rainy evening can go there. From a remote resort, a cancelled boat day can mean a long day in the hotel.

Booking tips and the season

TAT says visitors are advised to make early reservations, up to a year in advance, for accommodation during the peak season from late December to early January. For other dry-season weeks, book once your dates are firm. Beachfront rooms go first. In the wet months there is far more choice and rates are usually lower, but the sea conditions change what you can do. The best time to visit Thailand page shows which coast is dry in which month.

TAT also suggests that when you travel by ferry to islands around Krabi, it may be preferable to buy only a one-way ticket, so you can alter your trip and arrange your departure more easily. Apply the same logic to rooms: a refundable rate beats a cheap one if a storm can cancel your boat plans.

Check what the room includes. Breakfast, airport transfer, towels and a pool vary a lot, and an extra charge for a beach towel or a safe is common. If you rent a scooter, note that the UK advice says rental motorbikes in tourist areas are often unregistered and cannot be used legally on a public road, that you should not hand your passport over as a guarantee, and that riding without a valid licence could invalidate your insurance. If you plan to fly in, sort the Thailand entry rules: UK advice says foreign nationals must complete a digital arrival card online before arrival, and that from 15 September 2026 visa-exempt entry for tourism allows up to 30 days.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not book a resort far from town for a stay built around island tours, then discover the pickup adds to every morning. Do not book the cheapest inland room for a week of beach days. Do not assume every beach is swimmable at every tide or every season.

Get set up before you land with the connectivity guide for an eSIM and the insurance guides for medical and cancellation cover. For a wider view of the province, see the Krabi travel guide and the Railay page.

Domande frequenti

What is the best area to stay in Ao Nang?

Ao Nang Beach Road for most first trips, because restaurants, tour desks and the boats to Railay are close. Choose Noppharat Thara if you want a calmer beach and do not mind a short ride into town.

Is Ao Nang or Railay better for a first stay in Krabi?

Ao Nang is easier: more hotels, more food and a road transfer from the airport. Railay is prettier and quieter but reached by boat, about 20 minutes from Ao Nang according to TAT. Many travelers base in Ao Nang and add one Railay night.

Is Noppharat Thara a good place to stay?

Yes for a quieter beach inside the national park, 6 km from Ao Nang. It suits couples and families. It is a poor fit if you want to walk to bars and restaurants at night, and its canal dries at low tide.

Do you need a car in Ao Nang?

No. Songthaews, taxis and ride apps cover the beaches and Krabi Town, and boats cover the islands. A car or scooter helps only for inland sights on your own timetable; the UK government warns that hired scooters are often unregistered.

When should you book a hotel in Ao Nang?

For the peak season from late December to early January, the Tourism Authority of Thailand advises reserving up to a year ahead. Other dry-season weeks fill earlier than the wet months from May to October, when rates are usually lower.
