Hamurana Springs Nature Park is on Hamurana Road, north of Rotorua, beside a golf course. Its easy walking track follows clear spring water through a grove of redwoods planted in 1919. Along the way, look for the spring’s blue depths, smaller water sources and birdlife; signs share information about the area. The route takes around 45 minutes to an hour at a relaxed pace. Bring a picnic if you want to linger, and allow for uneven or muddy patches after rain.

The springs and their waters

Hamurana Springs sits near the northern side of Lake Rotorua. Water travels underground from the Mamaku Plateau before rising at the reserve, then flows away as a stream and eventually joins the lake. The springs are known for their depth and clear, blue-green water.

At the main spring, a viewing platform gives you a look down into the water. The colour shifts with the light, and the clarity makes it possible to see below the surface. Elsewhere on the route, Dancing Sands Spring is a shallower source where sand appears to move as water rises through it.

The track runs beside the water and through a redwood grove. The trees were planted in 1919 in memory of service personnel who returned from the world wars. Their scale is striking alongside the spring and its smaller waterways.

The route can be walked as a circuit, crossing footbridges and returning to the car park on a gravel track. At the viewing platform, you can also choose to retrace your steps. The walk is self-guided, with information signs along the way. Reports describe it as suitable for a range of ages and fitness levels; one account notes that a pram can manage most of the route, though branches may get in the way.

The cultural connection

Hamurana Springs is part of the rohe of Ngāti Rangiwewehi, whose people have a connection to the area. The reserve’s natural features and cultural stories are part of the experience. Guided visits led by a descendant of Ngāti Rangiwewehi are mentioned as an option; check what is available before your visit.

A separate nine-hole golf course is on site. The clubhouse looks over the course, and the golf experience has a separate fee from the spring walk.
