Kuirau Park

Kuirau Park gives you a chance to see Rotorua’s geothermal activity within a public green space. The park is close to the city centre, and entry is free. Its paths lead past steaming vents, hot springs and bubbling mud pools, with lawns and gardens around the geothermal areas.

The park’s features are active, and the landscape can change. Keep to the designated paths and stay behind safety barriers. Natural pools can be extremely hot, so do not mistake them for the foot baths intended for visitors.

Lake Kuirau and the gardens

At the northern end of the park, Lake Kuirau has a walkway across the steaming water. Colourful algae can be seen around the lake, and geothermal steam drifts across the path. Elsewhere, the grounds include landscaped lawns, flower gardens, a gazebo and a wisteria-covered bridge.

Boardwalks and walking paths bring you close to the geothermal features while keeping you on a set route. Take time to look at the different pools and vents as you move through the park; the colours and amount of steam can vary across the grounds.

Foot baths, family facilities and the market

The park has free thermal foot baths where you can sit and soak your feet. The baths are separate from the natural hot pools, which are not safe to enter. The foot-bath area was relocated near the playground, so head toward that part of the park if you are looking for it.

Families can also use the playground, picnic tables and open lawns. Barbecue facilities are available, and public toilets are on site. On Saturday mornings, the park hosts a market with food from different parts of the world alongside local fare. It gives you the option to combine a geothermal walk with breakfast or a meal from the stalls.
