Lago

Kandawgyi Lake

Kandawgyi Lake, also called Royal Lake, is an artificial lake east of Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon.

Kandawgyi Lake, also called Royal Lake, is an artificial lake east of Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon. Its wooden walkways and surrounding parks make it a place for a stroll, a morning run or a lakeside picnic. Look across the water for Karaweik Palace, a gilded replica of a Burmese royal barge, and views of Shwedagon Pagoda. Nearby eateries provide a place to pause for food or live music. Some paths have had repairs and damaged boards, so check your route as you walk.

Kandawgyi is one of Yangon’s two major lakes. It is artificial, with water channelled from Inya Lake. The lake was created during British colonial rule to provide the city with clean water. Its former name, Royal Lake, is reflected in the name Kandawgyi, which means “great royal lake.”

Today, the water and surrounding parks form a public recreation area east of Shwedagon Pagoda. Walkways run beside and across parts of the lake, and the parkland includes shaded areas, gardens and places to sit. The paths have not always been fully open: sections have been repaired or rebuilt, and some routes have been reported as blocked or uneven. Follow the open stretches rather than assuming you can complete a circuit.

The lake’s most conspicuous landmark is Karaweik Palace, a large, gilded structure shaped like a Burmese royal barge. It was built in 1972 as a concrete replica of a royal flatboat and now houses a restaurant. From the water’s edge, the palace makes a striking subject for photographs.

Shwedagon Pagoda is another reason to pause along the shore. Its gold dome can be seen from parts of the park, and its reflection has been noted on the lake’s surface, particularly around sunset. The lake is close enough to Shwedagon to combine the two in a visit; one suggested route is to begin at the lake before going to the pagoda in the evening.

Walking, picnics and practical details

People come here to walk, jog, picnic and spend time in the parks. There are eateries around the shore, and live music has been reported near restaurant areas. The surrounding green space also includes a plant nursery. If you want a low-key stop, choose a stretch of path, find a shaded place to rest and take in the lake and pagoda views.

Early morning and late afternoon are useful times for a walk, with the latter also bringing the sunset views. Conditions on the paths can vary: reports mention ongoing construction, holes and broken boards. Keep an eye on the surface and turn back if a section is closed or unsafe. Facilities may not supply toilet paper, so bringing your own is a practical precaution. Access arrangements have differed by entrance, and an older report described entry from the northern side as free; check locally rather than relying on that past arrangement.
