Park Colonnade

The Park Colonnade is a cast-iron colonnade in Dvořák Park, in the spa town of Karlovy Vary, on the banks of the Teplá River.

The Park Colonnade is a cast-iron colonnade in Dvořák Park, in the spa town of Karlovy Vary, on the banks of the Teplá River. It was built in 1880 and 1881 to a design by the Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. Its painted wrought-iron structure has sculpted details, and walking the length of it leads to the Snake Spring, one of the town's mineral springs. The park around it is green and quiet, a good place to rest during a walk through the town.

Built for the spa crowd

The colonnade was built in 1880 and 1881 by Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, Viennese architects who designed many of the town's spa buildings. It is the last surviving part of the Blanenský Pavilion, a concert and restaurant hall that once stood on this site.

The colonnade was originally part of a two-armed covered promenade in what is now the Dvořák Gardens. In 1965, part of the colonnade was demolished because it had fallen into disrepair, and only the eastern wing of the promenade section was kept.

The springs

Two springs flow here: the Park Spring and the Snake Spring. The Snake Spring was moved to the colonnade in 2001. Its water runs from a sculpted snake at the end of the walk, so the spring is easy to find.

The Park Spring can be reached from the colonnade through the underground premises of the Army Spa Institution. The Snake Spring holds fewer minerals than some other springs in the town, but it contains more carbon dioxide.

How a visit works

Start at the front of the colonnade and walk to the end, where the Snake Spring is. The walkway is long enough to take your time, and benches line the path. The area has restrooms and a wheelchair-accessible entrance.

The water has a strong taste. Take small amounts, and use a ceramic cup with a straw. In spring, magnolias bloom in the surrounding park, and a small pond lies nearby in Dvořák Park.
