The University of Queensland began collecting art in 1940, following a donation. The collection grew to include more than 4,400 works, with art dating from Australia’s colonial period as well as contemporary pieces. The museum was established in 1976 to house works the university had collected since the 1940s.

Its home is the Mayne Hall, originally designed by Robin Gibson as the university’s graduation hall in 1973. Architect Hamilton Wilson of Wilson Architects transformed the building into an art museum in 2004, with support from a major donation by The Atlantic Philanthropies.
