The museum is housed in the Pension Building, completed in 1887. Designed in the Renaissance Revival style and modeled on a Roman palace, it was built for the federal Pension Bureau. Today, the building’s scale and layout make the architecture part of the visit, alongside exhibitions on architecture, engineering, construction, urban planning and design.

The museum is at 401 F St NW, four blocks from the National Mall and near a Metro stop. It is also close to Judiciary Square.

The Great Hall is the building’s central space, with eight Corinthian columns rising 75 feet. A fountain stands in the middle, and galleries, classrooms and offices occupy four levels around the hall. Arched walkways line the lower levels. Look up as you cross the space to take in its height and architectural details.

The Great Hall is open to the public without an exhibition ticket. Some of the museum’s other displays require paid admission, so check ticket details if you plan to see a particular exhibition.

Exhibitions and activities

Exhibitions explore how buildings are designed and built, and how architecture and planning affect society. The program changes, with displays covering subjects across the built environment. Past exhibitions have examined projects by Frank Lloyd Wright, architecture recreated with LEGO bricks and the role of Brutalism in Washington, DC. Check the current schedule before you set out, as these examples may no longer be on view.
