At 105 N Union St on Alexandria’s Potomac waterfront, the Torpedo Factory Art Center fills a former naval munitions building with three floors of working artist studios and galleries. You can browse paintings, ceramics, photography, jewelry, sculpture and other media, and see artists creating work when their studios are open. The building’s industrial character is part of the visit, while the Alexandria Archaeology Museum adds a look at the city’s past. Admission is free, and third-floor windows look out over the river.

From munitions plant to art center

The building at 105 N Union St began as a naval torpedo factory. The Navy used the site for munitions production around the First and Second World Wars. After the Second World War, the building was used for storage. In 1974, it became an art center, bringing working artists and their studios into the former industrial space.

That change is still visible in the building’s character. Rather than a conventional museum of finished objects, the center brings studios, galleries and the history of the site together under one roof. Its former use gives the working spaces a distinct industrial setting, while the artists’ studios show how the building is used today.

Studios, galleries and working artists

The center has three floors of studios and exhibition spaces, with more than 80 working artist studios. The media represented include painting, ceramics, photography, jewelry, printmaking, sculpture, textiles and glass. The range makes a slow walk worthwhile: you can move from finished work in a gallery to an open studio where an artist is making something new.

When an artist’s studio is open, you can stop to look at the work and ask about the process. Some artists demonstrate their techniques during free Saturday demonstrations. Studio doors and activities can differ, so not every visit will include the same people at work. The center also has workshops and small shops where you can browse handmade pieces and art for sale. Buying is optional; there is no admission charge to look around.

The archaeology museum and river views

The Alexandria Archaeology Museum is inside the center. Its displays include objects recovered from local sites, such as plates, cups, pipes and coins associated with an early tavern, as well as equipment used by Civil War soldiers. The museum adds local history to a visit otherwise focused on contemporary art and the building’s industrial past.

On the third floor, windows look toward the Potomac River. Benches and seating areas around the center give you places to pause between galleries and studios. The layout is spread across several floors, so set aside time to explore instead of treating the center as a quick single-gallery stop.
