Alcatraz East Crime Museum

Alcatraz East Crime Museum sits on the Parkway at The Island in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

Alcatraz East Crime Museum sits on the Parkway at The Island in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Its two floors hold five galleries on American crime, from Old West outlaws and mobsters to forensic science and the justice system, plus more than 100 interactive exhibits. The strongest draw is the set of real artifacts, including the white Ford Bronco from O.J. Simpson's 1994 car chase. Plan a few hours, and make time for the hands-on areas if you enjoy playing detective.

The museum is at The Island, on the Parkway in Pigeon Forge, at 2757 Parkway. It is a privately owned, for-profit museum that opened in 2016 in a former shopping mall.

The building's exterior borrows from two prisons: Tennessee's state prison, built in 1898 outside Nashville, and the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary in San Francisco Bay. Although the museum is not officially tied to the San Francisco prison, its theme is built around it. Inside, the layout runs over two floors.

The five galleries

The first gallery covers the history of American crime, from Old West outlaws to pirates. Another looks at punishment and the consequences of crime. The crime scene investigation gallery shows how evidence is collected and studied, and the crime fighting gallery focuses on law enforcement. The fifth gallery covers counterfeit crime and pop culture, including how crime appears in film and on television.

The exhibits profile criminals and tell the stories of their victims. Temporary exhibits rotate through the year, and past rotations have covered mob history, the JFK assassination and Bonnie and Clyde.

Artifacts on display

The white Ford Bronco from the 1994 televised car chase is one of the best-known pieces. Other objects include Ted Bundy's Volkswagen Beetle, Al Capone's rosary, John Dillinger's death mask and the submachine gun Al Pacino used in the 1983 film Scarface. A Bonnie and Clyde collection is also on display.

The museum also shows items linked to Charles Manson and John Wayne Gacy, including a guitar and one of Gacy's clown suits.

Hands-on activities

The interactive areas go beyond reading. Visitors can play shooting games, have mugshot photos taken, and try to crack a safe. The CSI lab lets you work through a crime scene, and a scavenger hunt and a laser maze run through the galleries. A detective challenge is also available, and you can step into a replica prison cell.

Some visitors add the audio tour, which is one of the listed options.

The 9/11 memorial and harder material

The timeline of American crime includes 9/11, and the museum has a memorial to the attacks. The victims' stories in the galleries add weight to the criminal stories, so the visit is not all games and photo stops.

If you want a lighter visit, the pop culture gallery and the hands-on areas are the places to focus on. The memorial and the victims' stories are better taken at a slower pace.
