Spanish Village Art Center is a collection of artist studios and galleries in Balboa Park, at 1770 Village Place in San Diego. More than 200 local artisans work in fields including painting, sculpture, jewelry, glass, clay and photography. Wander the courtyards to see colorful tilework, browse handmade pieces and, when artists are at work, watch them create. The studios make this a good stop for locally made gifts, and a coffee cart in the village serves distinctive drinks.

The Spanish-style cottages and courtyards were created for the 1935 California Pacific International Exposition, with the aim of depicting an old village in Spain. Red-tile roofs, arched walkways and colorful paving contribute to the setting.

The courtyard is part of the visit, not just a route between galleries. Look down at the multicolored stones and tiles as you walk, then take time to explore the studios around the square.

Finding a piece to take home

The work on display includes paintings, sculptures, jewelry, photographs and glass art, alongside crafts made from materials such as wood, enamel, clay and fiber. Pieces are available to buy, which makes the studios a place to look for gifts or locally made art for your home.

Prices depend on the individual piece and maker. Browsing first gives you a chance to compare different styles and ask artists about their work.
