Patricia's Green

Patricia’s Green is a small neighborhood park at 50 Fell St in Hayes Valley, San Francisco.

Patricia’s Green is a small neighborhood park at 50 Fell St in Hayes Valley, San Francisco. Come for a breather among the lawn, benches, picnic tables and changing public art, then explore the cafés, bakeries and shops nearby. At the eastern end, the PROXY project uses shipping containers for places to eat, drink and shop. The park is compact, so it works best as a short stop on a Hayes Valley walk, rather than a destination for a long day outdoors.

A park shaped by community action

Patricia's Green
Patricia's Green

Patricia’s Green occupies a small parcel in Hayes Valley that was once beneath the Central Freeway. After the Loma Prieta earthquake damaged part of Highway 101, the freeway was removed from this stretch. Community activist Patricia Walkup and her supporters campaigned for years to create a public space here. The park was named in her honor.

Today, the green is a neighborhood gathering place along Octavia Boulevard. Its scale is modest: there is a patch of grass, seating and a playground. Temporary public art gives the park a changing focal point, so what you see depends on the installation in place during your visit.

PROXY and the surrounding streets

At the eastern end of Patricia’s Green, the PROXY project brings food, drink and shopping into shipping-container venues. It is an easy extension to a short park visit, especially if you want to sit outside with something to eat or browse nearby businesses.

In spring through fall, PROXY hosts free Friday-night outdoor film screenings. Showtimes are listed on the project website. Weekend pedestrianized streets and market stalls may add more to explore around the park. Hayes Valley’s cafés, bakeries and shops are close by, making the green a convenient pause between stops.
