Jamison Square is a small public park at 810 NW 11th Ave in Portland’s Pearl District. Its tiered fountain fills a shallow pool, then drains and begins the cycle again, giving children a place to cool off in warm weather. Wooden walkways, benches and a public restroom add to the stop, with cafes and shops nearby. Come for a family break, a picnic or a stroll through the neighborhood; check that the fountain is running if water play is the main reason for your visit.
A park from the Pearl District’s early redevelopment

Jamison Square opened in 2000, as the Pearl District was beginning to change into a neighborhood of high-rise homes, shops and restaurants. The park was part of plans to renew the area and was the first of three public spaces designed by PWP Landscape Architecture.
Its position between the Portland Streetcar routes on NW 10th and 11th streets makes it easy to fold into a walk around the district. Cafes, stores and galleries are close by, so the square can be a short pause between other stops.
How the fountain works

The fountain sends water over stone tiers into a shallow pool. Once the pool fills, the water recedes, is recycled and starts flowing again. The changing cycle gives children room to splash without the feature being a conventional swimming pool.
The fountain is seasonal in feel: warm weather is the time to plan around it, but it may not be running on a particular visit. If the water is off, the park still has grass, benches and wooden walkways for a quieter stop. A public restroom is also available.
