Historic Strawberry Mansion is a house museum in Fairmount Park, at 2450 Strawberry Mansion Dr in Philadelphia. Built in 1789, it was enlarged in 1828 with Greek Revival wings. Guided tours take you through rooms furnished with antiques and filled with artifacts, fine art and porcelain; photography is encouraged. Outside, you can walk the grounds, with cultivated gardens, an arbor and an apiary. The gardens and grounds are free to visit during the day, so you can stop for a walk even when you are not taking a tour.
The mansion’s history

Historic Strawberry Mansion is one of the historic houses within Fairmount Park and the largest of the park’s historic homes. Judge William Lewis, a lawyer and abolitionist, built the house in 1789. Lewis advised George Washington and Alexander Hamilton and drafted the first law abolishing slavery.
In 1828, two wings in the Greek Revival style were added to the original house. Its history spans the late 18th and 19th centuries, when people in Philadelphia’s wealthier circles used country houses as retreats from the city’s heat, smells and disease.
