Hukilau Beach is a sandy stretch on Oʻahu’s northeast coast, in Lāʻie.

Hukilau Beach is a sandy stretch on Oʻahu’s northeast coast, in Lāʻie. Its quieter shore, clear water and ocean views make it a good stop for a swim, a walk or a slower beach day away from Waikīkī. The water can be calm, and swimming and bodyboarding are popular ways to spend time here. The beach also has ties to the community fishing gatherings called hukilaus, which later drew tourists. Come for the coast and its local history, and watch for sea turtles from the shore.

Hukilau Beach

Hukilau Beach is on Oʻahu’s northeast coast in Lāʻie. The sandy shore has space to walk, relax by the water or spend time swimming and bodyboarding. Water conditions can vary, with calm water noted as well as medium-sized waves, so check the sea before heading in.

The beach is often quieter than Waikīkī’s busy shoreline, though it can still draw people. Sea turtles have been spotted here, and surfers are another sight along the coast. Keep a respectful distance from wildlife and enjoy the view from shore.

What a hukilau means here

A hukilau is a traditional Hawaiian fishing technique and also the name for community fishing gatherings. Lāʻie residents held these events long before they became a draw for tourists. In the 20th century, the community organized a hukilau as a fundraiser connected with raising money for a chapel. Visitors were invited to take part, and the event helped make the beach’s name familiar beyond the community.

The beach was also known as Hamana’s Beach, after Hamana Kalili, a local fishing master who kept his boathouse there. Kalili is recognized as the originator of the shaka sign after losing the three middle fingers of his right hand in an accident.

Planning a beach stop

Parking is available, and the beach suits a visit with children. Facilities are limited: bring your own snacks, and plan to use nearby stores if you need a restroom. Showers have been noted at the beach, but restroom access is not available there.

For a quieter stretch of sand, aim for an early morning or a weekday. Hukilau Beach is also close to Malaekahana and other beaches on the northeast side of Oʻahu, so it can fit into a coastal day out.
