Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is a protected marine area on Oʻahu’s southeastern coast, about 10 miles east of Waikīkī. The crescent-shaped bay formed in a collapsed volcanic crater, and its shallow inner reef gives beginners a chance to snorkel among tropical fish. Strong swimmers can explore farther out, where the reef and marine life are more varied. Entry includes an educational film about protecting the bay. Reserve a time in advance, then arrive early enough to park and reach your entry slot.

A volcanic bay protected for marine life

Hanauma Bay formed when a volcanic crater collapsed, leaving a curved bay on Oʻahu’s southeastern coast. The preserve lies offshore from Hanauma Bay Beach Park, about 10 miles east of Waikīkī.

The area became a protected marine life conservation district in 1967 and is also a state underwater park. Its reefs provide habitat for tropical fish and other marine life, including green sea turtles. Visitor numbers are limited to help protect the bay; one published account gives the daily limit as 720 people.

Snorkeling from the inner reef to the outer reef

The shallow inner reef is suited to beginners and families looking to see tropical fish close to shore. Farther out, the outer reef has clearer water and living coral formations, but it is a better choice for strong swimmers. Conditions differ across the bay: the left side is recommended only on calm days.

Stay off the rocks and coral while exploring. Reef-safe sunscreen or a long-sleeved swim shirt helps you protect your skin without relying on sunscreen alone.
