Built in 1884, the building was Los Angeles’s first purpose-built fire station. It operated as a firehouse until 1897, a span of 13 years, then served other uses. Its later life included a cigar shop, a poolroom and a hotel. After restoration in the 1950s, it opened as a firefighting museum in 1960.

The firehouse stands near Olvera Street in the Los Angeles Plaza Historic District. Its history connects the city’s early firefighting service with the changing uses of the surrounding area, including Sonora Town.

The museum’s collection includes equipment and other objects dating to the 19th century. The exhibits give a sense of how firefighting technology and the service itself changed, from volunteer crews to paid professionals with formal training. A large Thomas Guide hangs inside, offering a striking contrast with the firehouse’s earlier history: the map series began after the station had closed.

The main-floor collection is compact, so the visit can fit easily into time spent around the historic district. Staff are available to discuss the objects and the neighborhood. On Thursdays, volunteer-led tours run from 10am to 2pm and provide access to additional exhibits upstairs.
