Founded in 1797 in Mission Hills, Mission San Fernando Rey de España is a historic Catholic mission and museum complex in Los Angeles. Visit the chapel, with its high ceilings and decorated altars, then explore the museum’s collection of historical and religious artifacts. The well-kept grounds include a courtyard fountain and the Bob Hope Burial Garden. Plan for a couple of hours to see the buildings and outdoor spaces at an unhurried pace.
Founded in 1797

Padre Fermín Francisco de Lasuén founded Mission San Fernando Rey de España on September 8, 1797. It was the seventeenth of the 21 Spanish missions established in Alta California and was named for Saint Ferdinand. The mission later gave its name to the San Fernando Valley and the nearby city of San Fernando.
The mission was secularized in 1834 and returned to the Catholic Church in 1861. Its early role included agricultural and craft work as well as military use. The grounds and buildings have been rebuilt over time, so some parts of the present complex are reconstructions rather than surviving original structures.
The chapel, museum and grounds

Inside the chapel, look up at the high ceilings and take time with the altars and religious objects. The museum displays historical artifacts, though its exhibits include objects that are not all directly connected to the original mission. The complex also includes an archival center focused on the Catholic history of Los Angeles and California before 1840.
Outside, the courtyard fountain and gardens offer a quieter counterpoint to the indoor exhibits. The Bob Hope Burial Garden is at the back of the grounds. A picnic area, restrooms and vending machines are available on site.
